Little girl boxes
Holding only memories
Nothing kept for keepsakes other than
A certificate announcing birth
A few graded cards
Transcripted “I’ll get back to that soon” ideas
A few photos
Of celebratory events,
Relatives bearing DNA,
A tell-tale nose or ear here and there,
Colored strands of hair
To be passed down from photo to photo
Grandpa’s ears on a granddaughter
Color of eyes from some un-met aunt
Throwbacks coming forward
Mostly unknowns, seeking to be found

Early womanhood boxes
Caching immortality of dreams
Exercises learned from determined “my ways”
Edges of letters bordering regrets
Beribboned fantasies now scattered, untied
Blood-ties strewn where only winds
Know to fling them
Hither and yon
And still, mothers and fathers
Husbands and wives
Will never place a footfall
That a son or daughter will feel comfortable
In following;
But still, here are the photographs taken
To hold on to that something
Of what was, if only as a joke

Why is it that
Maturing boxes are stolidly gray?
Have hopes dimmed so much so, or
Is gray that voluminous
To hold all remainders
Of phases still to be?
Let me fill, then, those vast times yet to
Reign in silver and gold
One true love – one life that
Phased through all of his rougher days
So that he, too, might be in want
Of one,
Who will not judge
But fill his graying days
With solace of touch
True understanding
And a soul’s love

In this Keeper’s box of phases.

Soleil...hello, it's been awhile since you posted...good to see you!

"Who will not judge
But fill his graying days
With solace of touch
True understanding
And a soul’s love

In this Keeper’s box of phases."

I hope this box comes to you, special delivery, soon!

Soleil, So good to read you once again.
Very nicely done, thought provoking write.
Please say you'll stay awhile.

Those my age are now just greying around the temples...you make me think of him...the one who does not judge me and thinks it is wonderful when I am me, calling me a "a rose whose time has come to bloom, albeit a little late."  LOL

This is absolutely beautiful work.  And I dare say your words will linger long in my mind for many reasons.

Thank you...
Patricia

penned from deep wells poetess Sol...
deeeeeeep indeed...
a lovely ponderance...a unique line of thought...
Do the answers lie in those shades of gray?
