Fancy Flights

Meow
Bark, bark!

Bark!

Bark, bark, bark.

neighbors through the fence
greet the day with candor

stating their ownerships
of each patch of grass,
each patch of green

then calmly
go about
their morning routines
feigning ignorance
of the other’s presence
on the scene

one lapping up a drink
another napping up the sun

a third
yapping up the neighborhood
against sounds on the run

around the house
in another realm

two finches bob with delight
as they tick-tock at the helm

their rhythm’s
a metronome of rhyme
as they click off thistle seed
in a syncopated time
giving evidence of greed

then a passer-by
scares them from each perch
fleeing for their lives
they cloister in the birch

watching nature from my chair
is an occupation of delight
it gives one opportune
for her fancy to take flight

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

This year had become really busy until school got out. I've needed more "mind-numbing" time than usual, but now I seem to be flooding over again with prose and poetry.
