In the pan, heating over the fire,
Butter melts from cubes to pool to bubble,
To accept the long white gains,
To meet and defeat hunger’s desire,
Shallots, celery and a carrot chopped and chopped double
Added before the heat stains
As salt and pepper seasons and a touch of dill
Stirring always and stirring still
Adding broth but not adding all
To simmer, small bubbles
Bubbles to stir
Then broth to add
Bubbles to stir
Bubbles to stir
Wine to sip
To moisten the lip;
In time the rice softens
Tempered by the broth, confused by the stirring
Stir in some cheese to make more alluring
As the slow heat ends
And eating begins
As hunger ends.
As night time begins
And the day ends.

Gloom
In a discussion of poetry writing and the idea of the muse
or inspiration to write and lack of subject matter, I in a moment of arrogance said
“A poet should be able to write anytime about any thing”
this is the resulting poem when challenged.
