We rode through the gates Just as shadows were beginning To grow the long legs that night In her sparkle of stars strode on To cross the Euphrates. Our 40 camels A shaggy lot of bundles And drooping humps Seemed to know there was an end For the last mile their pace quickened And we Chatted of the garden Of eating again at the table Where melons were cut And the juices savored After long hot sun relinquished The land to the moon. We would work tomorrow In inventory and unpacking Beginning to bargain with the Suni Who ran the shop where we Before we left had purchased The silk rug that now bore the Stains and smell of us And love. Tonight, Danesh would have supper Fresh melon, figs, grapes. Cheese and wine Laid out for us And the floors swept So that we would walk again On something other than The grit of sand so always Surrounding us these last months. We would bathe To the scent of jasmine from the sill And honeysuckle that grew in bloom Along the wall to edge of window Above our bed. Our bed… Where when we were first I tasted the pleasures Of knowing you And where we planned this journey On all those nights between then And our leaving. You had chosen silk from Cathay, Hand painted with flowers That do not grow in the desert Even if watered and tended, And told me that on our return You would spread it on our bed And then give yourself to me That we might on that alter Offer again our flesh One to the other And bless the home We so long had left. I want no more Than this Forever. [This message has been edited by Cpat Hair (06-12-2003 04:41 PM).] |

Good Lord! All of these are great! Where are these coming from? Someone made the comment that they must be from another life..I believe it. Susan |

I don't know whether to sigh or say "dang"... I do dislike conundrums... I don't know [maybe I do] whose muse you are borrowing, but you are wielding that pen mighty well, Cap'n, mighty well indeed. And you know when I say less... it's more. |

There are the rare and gifted times when a poet is so highly inspired that they cross into heights of empyreal writing...becoming poetic prophets and shaman storytellers. You poet sir, are writing at that level with this series posted over the last couple days...and I for one, am very grateful I get to witness such outstanding inspiration and see the excellence in the results of such inspire. Very very cool writing Ron...most impressive indeed. I hope your enjoying writing these as much as we are reading them |

THAT DOES IT!! I'm packing my camel hair bikini, which of course I hope stays in the bag. Caravanserai in the background? I am almost at the drool stage now. [This message has been edited by Midnitesun (06-12-2003 06:15 PM).] |

I have reread this piece several times, in the first reading, from the first line, I held my breath, exhaling only as I finish the last line. The second reading...my flesh felt chilled and warmed simultaneously. The third reading, tears flowed from my eyes uncontrolled, and continue now as I write my reply. I am sorry. I can say no more. A thousand nights and a night within the sands of time. Could sense the melon, the jasmine...and most of all the heat. A pleasure to read C. Sincerely, Reg |

'That we might on that alter Offer again our flesh One to the other And bless the home We so long had left. I want no more Than this Forever.' If my homecomings were like this, I may go camping more often. |
