Magpie lady

In cornflaked coloured cardigan
Hair matted and iron grey
Shuffling along aimlessly
She haunts the streets by day

Dragging a battered trolley
Its shade is long forgotten
Shiny from all the layers of grime
threadbare along the bottom

She seems intent to study her path
Sifting through tangles of litter
Stooping to rescue tiny scraps
Of anything that seems to glitter

They laugh at her and call her names
Cruel to this wizzened old lady
No one seems to care at all
Or question why she is crazy

Long ago when things looked bleak
Life had nothing left to give her
She heard someone say if she looked hard enough
every cloud was lined with silver

So every dawn her quest begins
For as long as the sun remains shining
Her crooked old body just trundles along
In search of her silver lining.

I seem to be developing a real taste for your poetry and I will certainly be keeping an eye out for your name from now on. As a subject I think everyone has probably seen this person in the street and either crossed to the other side of the road or made sure they avoided eye contact. You've made them sound beautiful and oddly heroic in a way.
