It’s raining on a street of the city, the row houses are a mix of heavily curtain and boarded up windows, and doorways are a couple of stairs up, Three street lights are there, the lamps on the left and right are lit, the center one is dark. Enter Stage left dark dressed man leaning heavily on a black cane walking slowly. Enter Stage right a young man dirty and disheveled , he pauses briefly then approaches the dark dressed man and pulls a small gun. The cane flashes out and crashes against the disheveled one’s head and he collapses. The Church bells begin chiming nine times Hark to bells now rung, Tells how far the night is done, So beneath your tongue Place this coin, the lucky one, Payment for ferry To cross to the other side, Or will you tarry And continue this sad ride, Will you stay living In the realm unforgiving Or make the ferry’s crossing? Will you now linger? Will you falter once again With your own finger So close to ending the pain, Ending existence Since on the bottom you stay, What new resistance You can end it all this way. Why do you linger? Each pause makes it still steeper Squeeze now and greet the reaper. I give you the choice And the passage coin, Your action will voice Which way you’re going. The dark dressed man moves stage right The disheveled one comes to his knees with the gun to his temple. The Roll of thunder and the lights flicker and go dark A gunshot rings out The light returns to an empty stage with just the gun in the center Gloom |
