Enter center stage through a shadowy doorway and down three steps to the sidewalk as a bright light (Stage Left) slowly dims.  The man who would be tall if not bent is leaning heavily on his cane and is dressed entirely in black. He stares momentarily at the light and straightens and speaks in a firm voice.

Sink great yellow orb
Westerly dip taking light
Let the dark absorb
Courage leaving fright;
Creep across the skies
And take from us your long day
Lengthen shadow sighs
Where in the demons will play;
While darkness descends
While the brightness slowly ends.

It pains me to walk
It pains me to bend
It’s useless to talk
The paining won’t end.
It pains me to be
It pains me to cry
It’s useless to flee
I don’t even try.

Night sparkles come forth
Dimly shine on dark blanket,
Lost now is your worth,
Even the sailors forget
How you once did guide
Across ocean waves
That lonely mariners ride,
Depths no one would brave;
Starlight guide my walk
As this dark pathway I stalk.

Aimlessly I walk
Around the next bend,
Soundless without talk
Knowing not the end,
Continue to be
I can not now cry
It’s useless to flee
I don’t even try.

The dimming completes and he exits stage right, slowly and once again bent.

Gloom

Oh, Gloom, this is excellent. Very touching. I can see the stage performance and stand to shout "Bravo!". Enjoyed. Chris

Aimlessly I walk
Around the next bend,

...just maybe there will be someone to meet you and the pain will cease, at least for a while.

gotta go,
have a good one

You set the stage, Sir...
and even the dust lay silent
in awe.

Thank you, Nightshade
Glad you liked the different look of this.
Just using this to blend my three poems of the day.

Thank you, Nakdthoughts,
The character does meet someone
Check “Rainy Passage”,
Perhaps you had something different in mind.

Thank you, Sunshine,
Pleased you liked

Thank you, Seymour Tabin
Always a pleasure to see your response
