My heels sunk into the mud, I never cleaned those shoes.
I left them just as they had been that day.
Black dress, I guess I never wore it again either.
They laid you in the ground near your Mom and Dad.
It was cold that December day. December 27th 1996.
The American legionnaires were mixed in with the crowd.
Brightly colored hats adorned their heads.
My mother cried, my grandmother cried.
I had brought my son, you had never met him.
I always thought there would be another Christmas for us to share.
You loved Christmas so much; you were so young at that time of year.
Always so full of life. I can’t ever remember you down.
Staunch Democrat, Always for what you believed in.
Eating popcorn from a paper bag, Cold Busch beer while we all watched the game.
You would get so mad at the missed call from the umpire.
The Cards would have won every game if you were there.
Bingo at the legion, Then over to watch them Bowl.
How you loved and adored my Grandmother.
Every morning up at 7:00 off to Coffee, that was your special time.
I remember the Ponies, I remember fishing.
I wish I had listened to you more
You would tell of all of the family that had come before.
The Welge’s lived over here, and the Bueckman’s lived over there.
You would tell of your Dad and the railroad and the hand car he would take to Court your mother.
The stories of War, the stories of life, none of them to this day, embellish my mind.
I can not hear your voice tell them anymore.
I wish my memory would serve me more.
Today I'll buy a poppy in your memory, Grandpa
I’ll wear it proudly on my lapel.
Tonight I will cry and remember the Hero that you always were to me.
