I remember the day
We married
Small ceremony
In the church where she
Grew up
Four months pregnant
Still apprehensive
From scars of last failed vows
With 1 year old reminder
In tow

Somehow I pictured it different
Easier
Like some idealized fairytale
Happily ever after
When I step in the church
I left my courage on the step
Clammy hands
Petrified expression
I remember her expression
Hoping I wouldn't faint

It was something bigger then me
No road maps
No  crutches
This was real
"Til death do us part"
now seemed ominous
like a judge pronouncing sentence

I was happy
Scared, unsure
What had I done?, What did I do?
Claustrophobic
Losing air
Barely getting out I do

Honeymoon was short
Head first into parenting
Full time jobs
arguments
Friends warned she would
Beat me with her wooden spoon
So I hid them

It felt overwhelming
At "I do"
I was a husband
A father
With one on the way
My mind on overload
numb
I know a lot of things
I did then
Still haunt me to this day

My mind wonders from time to time
Three kids
Broken down house
Three almost separations
And only a handful of "good" memories
To show
I wonder is it worth it.

I wonder...
then the spoon hits down hard
Crashing end to thought
Reminding why I stopped thinking

This is amusing though not funny. My first wife was a MEAN woman, my second just grumpy rather than mean, perhaps if there is a third she will be a happy person. Curious if this is a true life poem... and if so whether you are still together.
Either way I enjoyed reading

Brad, this is so sad to me. I really hope
that you two have enough love left in your relationship to make your marriage work.

Hugs to you both,
Ethel

I hope so for him, too!!)

Dear Brad, this is a powerful write ... and it hits some chords ...
Sorry for "only a handful of good memories"!
So dreams did not manifest. This is sad.
Love, Margherita

(big hugggssssssss) Oh Brad, I hope all is alright, dearest friend, I too would feel petrified in such a moment if I ever get to live that day, and fear is all part of it but I know no matter what time is the right time you will find the sincerity! (sigh) I send healing hugs your way, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Brad, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Truly a heart felt write.  It made me remembers my marriages.

A marriage "that works" is one that lasts long enough for one or both of the two people to die before the marriage is dissolved.  The same standard seems today to be applied to relationships.

All things end; even life on this planet will one day end.  Why do we cling so desperately to fantasy pledges of eternal love?  Most of the time, it is just until the money runs out or the sex gets stale or the animal by-products hit the proverbial fan.

Well, I wish you luck and good fortune.

Hey Brad, I really like your style of writing. This piece was real funny, and so true too. I could relate with quite a bit of it. This part was my favorite:

“Honeymoon was short
Head first into parenting
Full time jobs
arguments
Friends warned she would
Beat me with her wooden spoon
So I hid them?

Thanks for the laughs, and for sharing with us a personal part of your life. That takes real guts. I can really respect that!

Oh, and you might want to consider looking into a nice set of Rubbermaid utensils. They’re great for Anniversary’s, Valentines Day...

Hey, they even make great Father’s Day gifts too?

lol
