A litter of squirrels will frolic outside the window sill
hopping on a balcony for a Sunday mornng treat
a reminder that you are surrounded by other creatures
that mirror characterstictics behind your own
features

Other beasts, less successful will soon depart
should this makes humans jump at a start
to witness sharks cut for fin soup..then discarded to sea
and watch those squirrels run up neighbourhood trees.

those arboral critters will dash and scurry
my life will pass with the wind in a hurry
lists of creatures in constant demand for food tables
will fall short in supply...we haven't been able

to reduce our rampant scourge on endangered species
taken for granted...as endless sources of abundance
face arguements of how to continue to feed millions
while continuing to promote the preservation of what is left
have I become deft?

While the sea does not furnish an inexorable supply
the squirrel will continue to flourish and multiply
for the good or the bad
inheritance will be sad
another example of nascent capacities that change earth's face?
while lacking the ability to reflect
to check the hunger of this race
another specie might control this place...

May not be the squirrel or the rat beneath city streets?
may not be the squirrel that I give a Sunday treat
may not be a banded Racoon or her pups
who'll be the last to eat at the table?
