If Trees Could Speak

Oh forest, if your trees could speak
The secrets you withhold
In naked winter, cold and bleak
What splendors would unfold

The seasons of a thousand years
Contained in ageless rocks
Are melodies of joyful tears
Held in your music box

Your bark protects the song within
The whispering of a breeze
That swept the leaf and needled limb
Of fir and poplar trees

Your fingered branches then would strum
A soothing melody
Of growth and lushness underneath
A summer canopy

Of fallen timber, hollowed out
Refrains of death and birth
Of fawn and cub and sapling sprout
And seedlings of the earth

The crackling of the autumn shrub
The strains of meadow lark
The honing of an antler’s rub
Against an aging bark

The sounds unheard by human ear
Are music’s finest hymns
Plucked on a harp serene and clear
And carried by the winds

If trees could speak, the words untold
Of love's most sacred tale
Would in a sonnet now unfold
Along this wooded trail

Elizabeth Santos

Maybe we just have to train our ears to listen!

Nice poem, I enjoyed reading this...

“We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best that we can find in our travels is an honest friend.” –Robert Louis Stevenson

Oh Elizabeth,
This may be one of my favorite works of yours...although it would be tough to choose just one.
So much of my thoughts portrayed here...as if you looked inside my heart, and painted the picture for me to look upon.
Thanks, TD

What a beautifully, melodic poem Liz. Perfect in rhythm and rhyme, the flow in this is soothing and delightful. If anyone can speak for trees, you have just done so, my friend ... and wonderfully so.

I've missed reading you. What a lovely way to start my day.

Best wishes and hugs,
/Kit

you mean to tell me that you don't hear the trees??

I would have never guessed. . .

...but they do speak.  They often say, "If only humans would listen."

*smile*

Great poem.  Thank you for sharing it.

Liz, this speaks to my spirit. In a forest I feel at one with the trees and I listen to their whispers...

This poem is a wonderful expression of your truly beautiful soul. God bless you, Dear One.

Love & warm hugs,
Linda

(smiles) Oh Elizabeth, this is beautiful, sweet friend, I believe trees truly can speak, just we have to use our intuition to hear what they are saying as some things are just simply not straight-forward but ever so magical! (kiss on cheek) God Bless You, sweet friend, yay, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Elizabeth, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
