Rarely do the blue ones stand But stretch their roots to dip in cool So prairie’s middle is not for them, But ‘long a ditch or standing pool They hold one’s eye then make it blink For no other blue is there like this, You think it shimmers, then it fades, Then it blows a heartfelt kiss Their green is near as high their heads So deceptive is their wink They’ve no scent to fill the air But they make one stop and think See the ruts in Kansas soil, Where water stands with rain Trust me when I say the flower Was set there to ease the pain See the ditch that gathers up The moisture from the air Here the blue calls to the sky For I saw it standing there I swear by God they love the wheat Their eyes watch it turn to gold For delicate is as their name implies Such strength as one would hold. This is when my spring has come In the seeing of the blue This is Kansas in my eye As I share with all the view. ~*~ Dedicated to Tim - for his garden [This message has been edited by Sunshine (05-10-2003 09:46 PM).] |

Thank you kindly my Kansas friend. Not to often I get poems written for me. And when they are beautifully written about my favorite State, that even makes it more enjoyable. When I was young, my mother would often make my father stop beside the road to pick wildflowers. As long as everyone else thinks of Kansas as the Great American Desert, it makes it that less crowded and available to us'ns. Have a great Mothers Day and thank you muchly. http://www.lib.ksu.edu/wildflower/blueindex1.html |

I do the same, Tim. I take buckets and put them in the truck, and when we're on our way back into town, I make him stop and pick some wildflowers. I have scavenged the prairie ground during fall, as nature has dried her own, and pick those as well, making great pots of arrangements. And thank you for the extra addition of the link - this is one I have been looking for, to put names to some of those indescribable beauties that treat my eyes and footsteps when out on the prairie... and you're welcome. |

I am somewhat partial to purple locoweed myself, but that ought to be self-explanatory. |

LOL...to each their own, Sir...I'll leave your choice to your own reasoning...but as always, I have been attuned to the bachelor button, or cornflower, since a child in California. Coming to Kansas, however, and to my midwestern roots of my family - I feel an even deeper sense of it than I ever did before. As this poem came into its own today, I thought of your garden, and it only seemed right to share. |

Karilea, This is wonderful. You took me there. No sense in quoting any one favorite line or stanza, for each is special. You brought those flowers and part of Kansas alive on this page... fantastic writing... Enjoyed, Hugs, Pat |

I grew up with that flower, close enough to Kansas City to call it that....and close enough to growing up to call it -that-.... ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸ ¸¸ºº> ~~~(¸¸ER¸¸ºº> |

JM...you're the Blue Moth Queen...so I had a feeling the color alone would make you flighty with glee...thank you dear, for reading me! BC...me too! Thank you! Pat, a very kind remark. Thank you so much for taking time to enjoy this with all of us... Ecrivan...isn't it just too much sometimes? ...but then, get me out on the prairie and let me walk in the wind and you've got one happy Sun.... Scorpio - quite possibly the answer is yes. You see them pop up where the water runs, sometimes pools...chances are if they ARE out in the middle of the prairies it's because their toes get to play in the puddles now and then...thank you for reading! Ivy Rose, thank you, and Congratulations on your 1000th post! Passing Shadows, so lovely of you to peek in. Thank you! Mysteria, it's odd why our hearts find the strangest places to call home, but yes, Dorothy did indeed love it when the flowers bloomed... Maree...captured? Nay, there is no such thing as capturing any place, or any one's, spirit. It roams the world...but if we could catch just a glimpse of it? Then we can smile...knowingly! Ethel, Happy Mother's Day to you, too! Mon Cherie, I'm glad, because I liked it too! Thank you, little one... Martie, sometimes the color seems so...magical...you're not sure you really see it! It plays with your mind, and calls you home! Thank you, my friend, for your kind eyes... Chris, have a blessed Mother's Day, my friend...and thank you so much for your beautiful thoughts... Enchantress...so many things going right in your world...bless your heart for taking time to read...thank you! Ed...how gracious of you to refrain from calling it a weed. I saw that...and smiled! Thank you! KJ! How kind of you to come on in! Isn't that the greatest site Tim shared with us? Thank you! [This message has been edited by Sunshine (05-11-2003 06:01 PM).] |

Beautiful. Here in the high desert, each spring, the western hyacinth blooms in my front yard. Can't bring myself to mow it until they are gone. Well, anyway, I use that as an excuse. Lovely flowers, lovely lines. Frank Tymon Frank Tymon |

Frank, the desert has a scene all its own. I lived close enough to them when in CA that my memories of walking THAT landscape put me in a whole other world! I don't know that I would trade with you - yet - but I certainly can appreciate the footsteps you take! Thank you! |

Oh Karilea, thank you for sharing your Kansas Blue. Better yet, thank you for sharing the beauty that is you! Blue is the theme today, Bill Charles had some lovely blue eyes in which to gaze...now you have the lovely Kansas blue. I think I will take a walk today, and see what blue will come my away. Hopefully, it will not be the blue of sorrow. But if it is, there is always tomorrow! Gee, the rhyme is getting thick in here... -Patricia |
