Old Photographs

This is your life, your ancestry, the ones who bravely came
And carried to America your family’s given name
The lady of a century past in pinafore of lace
Has your smile cast within the shadows of her face

Her eyes and mouth resemble yours, her laughter and her tears
Have been recorded in your heart to last throughout the years
Old photographs long overlooked, the binding thread of kin
That weaves among these pages truly stirs the soul within

Don’t throw away your history, don’t ever bury roots
For they have given nourishment, and you have been the fruits
They handed down a heritage of principles and truth
That you have harbored in the heart and spirit of your youth

Some things you do by nature without ever knowing why
These are the lifelines of the past inscribed within your eye
Some day your portrait will remain a symbol for a child
Who’ll recognize her beauty in the shadow of your smile

Liz - You are so incredible!  I have yet to read anything you've written that has not left me in awe of your gifts.  I have been gone a long, long time, so I was afraid you had left, too, and I wouldn't have the opportunity to read any more of your wonderful poetry.

Liked this very much. It's said if you want to know how a potential mate will look in the aging process look to her mother. I've recently seen an example where a sepia portrait from 3 generations ago held strong resemblance. As always, perfect cadence in your two tiered rhyme.

Liz... I really loved this one! You are so right.. pictures from the past are cherished and much loved by the generations that come after. I didn't have many pictures of my maternal grandfather, and I didn't understand when people told me I had the "McCoy" features.. but then I saw a picture of him and my age and we do share many of our looks. I hope my vote helps this get in the book!

Your response to this poem is heartfelt. Thank you all so very much.
I had saved all the old negatives that nobody else wanted and today they are a treasure of the past that all the family wants to have, and what a great gift they make. It's a fun project that has so much meaning.
THanks again for your comments

Gorgeous!!! Your poem has special meaning to me because my mother passed away when I was two years old, but even so, I need just look at the photographs of her and her little baby and know without any doubt that I am loved. Beautiful, beautiful writing my poet friend.

Elizabeth:  Such a lovely and meaningful poem.  Haven't seen any of yours for too long, but I only post at Corner Pub and Spiritual, so that's problably why.

I too have made photo albums for all our children and placed as many old photographs as I could, in each one. I know they treasure them and it was a wonderful project.

I am voting for this one but all of yours are outstanding.

This poem touched me in a way few other do, I cannot begin to express the feelings that I have directed at this poem it gave me a sense of warm fuzzy goodness. I have often looked upon the faces of those gone before me and found myself lurking within there depths...Beautifully written, this book would be incomplete without this.
