Accidentally, we saw each other We smiled, gave obligatory waves and returned to our respective tasks I tried to count my toe hairs You resumed your conversation with your friend We walked home together before Do you recall the time I lied to your dad about your english grade? You looked at me with an expression I couldn't quite figure out-- was it gratitude or amazement? There should be some official etiquette that calls for us to speak to our long-lost friend for at least fifteen minutes when we chance upon each other We will swap gossip about former friends, update on our recent happenings, maybe even relive those good old days and laugh I'm sorry I stood aside as the flame in our friendship gradually extinguished We are like grown-up puppies given up to different homes, soon after birth Did we ever function as a pair of chopsticks? I never failed to call you before school reopened so that I could "transfer" answers to my undone homework I need those now [This message has been edited by kaile (02-21-2003 12:36 AM).] |

hey, thanks for reading this one, despite its length...really appreciate it... well, i am at the stage of life in which i am taking stock of my friendships...i guess i understand sometimes friendships die away, with the plug pulled and it's an inevitable part of growing up...but why is "forever" so darned elusive? and it hurts at times and i am left wondering if i am the only person who cares too much thanks for visiting me |

Kaile... liked the ending verse..the idea of depending on another for answers...and needing that now just as you did then.... |

A lovely introspective piece poet kaile...well done..those last lines had such bittersweet poetic impact. "Trees are poems that the earth writes upon the sky ... |

Did we ever function as a pair of chopsticks? This, alone, makes it worth inclusion in the book. |

"Did we ever function as a pair of chopsticks?" and "should be some official etiquette that calls for us to speak to our long-lost friend for at least fifteen minutes when we chance upon each other" Time to dust off that old pair of chopsticks? time to pick up the phone? Friendships you thought would last forever sometimes seem to go the way of the dinosaur. But perhaps those dinosaurs are still around, just resting in another form? |

Janet, i only learnt the word introspection last year and in the short time i have known it, it has become one of my favourite words in the English language..thanks for thinking this is so... Mike, LOL...you singled out those lines when i first posted it...gave me a chuckle when i read your comment this time round Kacy, you reckon? i suppose so though i must say that i am too proud and apprehensive to initate contact...go figure besides, so many years have passed...i'm trying to hold on to my remaining friends as best as I can though....hugs for your reply... lastly, thanks to everyone for reading and replying... It is sad when a friend leaves our life. There are "friends of the road" who come into our lives for reasons that sometimes may not be apparent, but they enriched our lives in one way or another--even if it was only to present lessons for us to learn from the relationship. ~ May your true, life friends, number as the stars in the firmament... Warm morning hugs, Earth Angel |

Kaile, there is a saying, "Pride goeth before the fall." Pick up the phone or write that "What's happening?" note. Now if only I would follow my own seemingly good advice! |

Well said Kaile... I especially like the lines: "We are like grown-up puppies given up to different homes, soon after birth Did we ever function as a pair of chopsticks?" That's just awesome imagery! Hmm, my best friend and I went through this a couple of years ago, drifting apart, and not really noticing for a while.. we tried to make it work, but in a way, we are still in this boat.. but this time we notice it, and try to fix it.. You have my vote here Kaile! Keep writing.. -Lynne Bless your cotten sockies, you poetic maniacs. ^_^ |

There are so many different types of friends that we have along our way through life. There are friends of the road, friends of the heart, friends that teach us valuable life lessons, soulmate friends, friends for life...but each of them has their special place in our life journey. I felt your confusion and sorrow... Warm morning hugs, EA |

There are plenty of old friends I would love to send this to...if I only knew how to find them *sigh* ....and yes, losing a friend is just as hurtful as losing a lover...and sometimes even more painful |

I wonder who was it you met, but I think 'long-lost' friends shouldn't just pass like that... Unless they are just mere acquaintances, that'd be a totally different thing. _,,,^.^,,,_ |
