"Like Sand"

Copyright 2003 by:  MARK V SHELDON

Like sand through my life's fingers,
You sifted to new ground...
Like land, mirage still lingers,
Though you're not to be found...

An hourglass eternal
Turned over on its end
And our glass -- a journal
To toast us and pretend

My eyes no longer stinging
From lies into them blown
Surprise no longer clinging
To grains of Truth now known

My heart's once fertile soil
Now arid, barren land
A cart's fruit left to spoil
And dry away like sand...

OMG I've missed you! OK, now to read the poem.

Oh Mark, this one made me cry. It is very beautiful, but so very, very sad...I'm emoting all over the keyboard here.
But then that's what you hoped for, isn't it?

May love and light always shine upon you!

This is a sweet poem that does a good job exploring the many facets of the metaphor of sand.

"If history is to change, let it change. If the world is to be destroyed, so be it. If my fate is to die, I must simply laugh"

Hi, Mark! Long time no read! This poem was  well written but it was very desolate and sad. I hope this was just your being creative--and highly so at that!---and not a reflection of your own personal life.
It was good to read your work again!

~ Warm hugs and a good morning smile!

Kacy...  thank you so much for the warm welcome back!  I poked my head in for a moment and saw that you guys are about to do a new book (!) so I thought I'd "pitch" one of my favorite poems...  Glad it was powerful enough to move you -- that's an appreciated honor.  Hugs to you, and can I offer you a hanky...?

Noah:  Thank you for your vote and always uplifting and image-laden words.  You are appreciated.

Bridgette, thank you for your kind words and understanding -- they are not taken for granted.

fractal007:  With gratitude I read your comments, but "bittersweet" may have been a better word...

Hi Vicky -- thanks for sharing & I'm glad you enjoyed.  A right back at you!

Charisma:  Thank you so much.  I love it when beauty and pens meet...

Hey there, Connie!  Care for a mental mint?   Thank you for your words.

A distinct honor, Kit, coming from a master like yourself...  Thank you for the read.

El_Campeador, I appreciate your acknowledgement and recommendation.

My Lady Poet deVine...  may I humbly bow in appreciation?

Sunshine...  thank you for the smile as only your rays can do.  As for the hounds...

Hi Ron, and likewise!  It's great to be in good company in this virtual home, and I always respect your thoughts.

Hiya Earth Angel and thank you for your observations...  No worries -- all is well now, but this definitely was inspired at the time it was written.  A most pleasant evening to you with a hug and a grin.

Chanson, such were the colors of the time...  Thank you for your time and thoughts.

Hey there, Nancy!  A big hug to you and a sincere thank you for your vote.  I had to take a moment and see what everyone here at "home" was up to and am very happy with the results!  Read you soon...

hoot_owl_rn, thank you so much for the smile and kind words.  I've been following my Muse and Life as they lead me but managed to duck in for a moment or two...

Sudhir...  another high honor from a master of imagery!  Thank you for the smile and kudos.

RSWells, again I am humbled, for you are a high master of the craft.  Thank you for the read and welcome.

I love the apparent simplicity of your poem yet descriptive with each line rhyming and each word and each punctuation found in its most proper place. Shows that you put much thought into your writing. Very very nice.

This reminds me so much of one that I did once, that I had to check yer box.

smile, hope it's not inappropriate to share mine with ya? (it's quick, I promise)

"I held a dream in the palm of my hand.
I held it too tight. It turned into sand.
All I had left was the sand and the sweat
that slipped through my fingers--
leaving only regret."

so y'see? I can relate. *click*

Good morning, Bill and thank you for your support.

Hi Mysteria -- thank you kindly.

A most welcome honor from the moth...  thank you Janet -- I thought its rhyme and cadence may cajole you in for a read...

Bob:  thank you for noticing.  Ultimately, everything is very simple, but it's the detalis leading to that simplicity which can often prove to be infinitely complex...

Good morning, Sadra!  It's great to see your name as well.  Hope all is well with you...

Hey there, Maureen...  just when you think you've got me figured out, eh?   I appreciate your welcome.

Good day, Raph.  I had no idea I was even missed...  thanks for the kind words.  I've just been "surfing" life, and it brought me back here for a bit, much like Hotel California (in a positive way):  "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave"... (not that I'd want to...)

aries_luv_ppl:  a most appreciative thank you.

serenity blaze, thank you for relating and for sharing -- interesting how situations can be different yet the same, no?

Yanno, mark, this is what happens when you don't squeeze the "fruit" enough before you make your selection.  Now look at ya.  If you keep up your ways, you'll turn into a scalawag like Balladeer, and even worse Toerag.  On a more serious note, I like the metaphorical way you dealt with loss and disappointment.

Good evening to you, Ethel!  I'm humbled and happy to hear that I could serve as a teacher of sorts for you with my "20 OR LESS..." series.  I'll try not to be a stranger too often but must pay heed to life's requests...  Thank you so much for the heart hugs -- I value your compassion and humanity -- don't ever lose that.
