HARRIET HILDEGARDE Harriet Hildegarde, A very mean witch, Lived in the town Of Deep Puddle Ditch. She lived in a castle With thirty three rooms, Six cats, two owls And a collection of brooms. The castle was built Of bat wings and bones. Cricket nests, dragon teeth And ugly black stones. And all of the little folk Of Deep Puddle Ditch, Were as scared as could be Of the mean-natured witch. Harriet Hildegarde, A very mean witch. Had a long nose Which when mad ‘twould twitch, And the whole little town Would suffer in gloom, When she’d take to the air On a fast zooming broom. The townsfolk appointed A Committee of Ten, Of pixie and elfin And little gnome men. To find a way For Deep Puddle Ditch, To get rid of the broom riding, Nose twitching witch. In the neighboring town Of Blowing a Blizzard, Lived Harriet’s cousin WilliJo Wizard. Jovial and loud And always so pleasant, He lived in a cottage With a high plumed pheasant. ‘Twas to him they came, The Committee of Ten, Of pixie and elfin And little gnome men. In stumbling words, Hating to snitch, Told WilliJo Wizard Their fear of the witch. WilliJo Wizard Burst out in laughter. Told the little folk He’d never heard dafter. He bent down towards them Rolling his eyes, Said “For intelligent people, You’re not very wise.” Back to their town Went the Committee of Ten, To share the solution That they had been given. It sounded so easy, It couldn’t be hard. Whilst standing together, Old thoughts to discard. An invitation written On a gossamer wing, Was sent to the castle On the first breeze of spring. “All of the little folk, Of Deep Puddle Ditch, Request the attendance Of their local witch. Please join us Sunday In the town park, To picnic and party Until it is dark.” It was signed in nectar With a fine feather pen. Held a promise of friendship By The Committee of Ten. For WilliJo Wizard Had made mere mention, Harriet would do anything To get some attention. She’d ride through the air On one of her brooms, ‘Cause it beat being lonely In one of her rooms. Harriet Hildegarde, A kind, friendly witch, Lived in the town Of Deep Puddle Ditch. She revamped her castle Of thirty three rooms, Started a daycare, Gave rides - on her brooms. The moral of the story Of Deep Puddle Ditch Is be kind to everyone, Even a witch. Tho’ nasty and mean They just might in the end, Turn out to be Your very best friend. I be me BUT who does me be? |

I kinda like this. --Liz You can sit there and forgive someone until the cows come home, and it won't make a bit of difference until they forgive themselves. |

Yay!!! (does happy dance) Ooooohhhhh...I just love happy endings, oh my gosh, this is such a coincidence because I just read Balladeer's beautiful poem about loving everyone by God and this is an epitome of a tale that relates so well to that lesson, yay! (kiss on cheek) God Bless You, sweet friend, this gave my heart a big smile, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Das, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton "Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..." |

Though the ending moralizes a bit much for my liking, I love how this poem exists in its own world and time. |

I can relate, how many times have I played the witch when feeling neglected. Certainly vote on this one. I'm a reader - not a writer. |

I have read this before several times, just couldn't find the right words to do it justice. I like the fairy tale rhyme to it, and the closing lines most of all. Enjoyed your sentimentality~ |

This is one of those poems that was probably written with a readership of childen in mind, but which works just as well for adults because of the way the story leads one on from the top, through the middle and (before you know it) to the end. The journey is very pleasurable and well worth the read. My 6 year old son absolutely loved it and has awarded it "must read again'n'again" status. A must for the anthology! I could have sworn I voted for this before too, maybe this was one that was affected by the crash and some replies were lost? I'll vote again in case that's what happened. I found this delightful, SPIRIT! |

Hello SPIRIT I'm sorry that it took me so long to get to this one but I am sure glad I did. Your words took me on a magical journey and ended with an important message. Thanks for sharing your amazing talent. This is for you, written by me. "A poet weaves his words through each verse to create a most beautiful tapestry for us all to admire." Take care......Sue I am in motion |
