Dana & Konrad

Dana’s voice sounded ancient,
appealing, but distant, coming slowly to him
as if it, and she, were surrounded
in auburn tresses, with liquid pools of warm
chocolate looking down at
him,
what was his name,
Konrad?

asking,

come back to me.

Konrad braced for the spike of fire,
but all he could hear was the trembling, deep
flutter of Dana’s voice,

come back to me.

His mind pried with the thought
of opening his eyes, but a weight
threatened a spill of sand, or so it felt,
though his mind reached toward Dana…

funny, all he could see
was her in his wasteland of a mind,
but there she was, slender, tall,
beckoning,

come back to me.

His eyelids were heavy,
but slowly, a feeling of
liquid gold ran down his throat,
burning his stomach, slow warm retch building deep
down inside,

then he watched as she turned,
as she walked off into a wasteland now
turned green,
she rounded an outcrop of rock, looked back again,
waved,
she was clutching
something in her hand,
brandishing it at him, motioning him to follow,
to track her, like they used to do…

he crunched through tall grass, multicolored
red, gone gold, paled to yellow leaves underfoot, some
bronzed in time,

then walked for awhile,
though his limbs felt slogged in wet,
so that when some type of forest drew ahead of him,
then, overhead, shadows began falling,
and somewhere
way off, he could hear their waterfall, clearly,
the one they had swum in, the one where they had
made promises,

somewhere, far off, he could smell Dana,
Dana, his soft rock…

Where had she gone?

He looked up, as leaves began to fall from
high trees overhead, tall musty smelling trees,
smelling of gray, smelling of death,
worse than autumn’s lifeless hold, stinking
of retch, and far off, he could hear
Dana’s ancient, shimmering voice, calling,

Come home to me.

He looked up once again, as a pale sun faded behind
growing hoary ice-filled billows
of leaves, falling, each becoming larger,
filled with typeface, filled with
words, filled with news

.
.
.

dead is dead.

Konrad screamed,
Sitting straight up on the spit and
lust stuffed bed, acrid scents filling
his nostrils,
and held his splitting head,
then fell back, his arms flailing, his
right hand falling upon the certificate on the side
table, and he clutched it,
scrunching it into a cruel twist,

dead was dead,

why wouldn’t he die?

I see you still tease in the slow unwrap of your tale... this layer seemed as if it was recycled gift wrap, crinkled beauty ....

Cpat, is that approval, or impatience? ...

You know Sunshine, I was trying to think of a word, but I can't, so I'll just say that I have relished reading it. Thanks.

It's amazing I won. I was running against peace, prosperity, & incumbency.

'dead was dead,

why wouldn’t he die?'

Because Kari has to finish THIS story first!
