Listen to my sisters sing of Peace,Respect and Love's golden ring. Their song is too often unheard, ignored. In the frenzied rush to fight, we all get gored. Take a moment to look at reality from a different point of view. You will hear the same lyrics, it's just a different melody. Listen to my sisters sing. You just may recognize your favorite tune. *** Listen to these Muslim Women speak. This is an exerpt from today's arabnews.com: They spread cheer and are clearly overwhelmed by the extent of the event. They are the women who make up 50 percent of all Hajis. “We heard that there are more than a billion followers of our religion, but we never realized that they came from so many countries and so many cultures,” said Noreen Moazzam from Sindh in Pakistan. “I am simply amazed and am very happy that I belong to a religion which has worldwide acceptance.” Many of the women were eager to have their say on the misery in today’s world. “We know our religion is under attack and that’s why, on the plains of Arafat on Monday, I’m going to pray for peace for all humanity,” said Dewy Asmayawati from Jakarta, Indonesia. She felt there was no room for extremism. “If Islam were about extremism, we would not have this many people in our fold,” she continued. “This is proof of the fact that we are followers of a liberal religion. Its emphasis is on the emancipation of humanity. We should remove the word ‘hate’ from our lexicon.” As she understands it and practices it, Islam is all about love and compassion; Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the supreme example. Dewy observed that there was a lot of misunderstanding among non-Muslims about how women are treated in Islam. “We feel happy in Islam and we have no problems,” she explained. “We have not been able to explain this to non-Muslims who confuse cultural aspects with religious edicts,” she added. The female pilgrims are strong Muslims and don’t hesitate to speak out with indignation about how they have seen their faith and their role in it being misrepresented. Sumaya Suliman from Johannesburg, South Africa, believes that the West is prejudiced against Islam and that “whatever you do, they will continue to attack your principles and they will continue to generalize things.” However, she added that at Arafat she would pray for the unity of Muslims and peace for all humanity. A much needed perspective,it made me think alot about intolerance and misunderstanding. It has always puzzled me that there was so much hate between 3 religons that were all fathered by Abraham.Well said. |
