It's called the Big Thicket -
Perhaps not a particularly colorful name
Like Enchanted Rock or Copper Canyon
But it's accurate just the same.

Pine trees soaring into the sky
Are rooted in impenetrable underbrush
Shrubs and briars woven tightly together
Create a haven to which critters rush.

Hunters who breach its barriers
Must be willing to sacrifice some skin
To push through, one slow step at a time
To discover the secrets within.

Most come home empty-handed
For the thicket's a great place to hide
When you can't see three feet ahead of you
Your prey might be right by your side.

The hunt is quite different this morning
While most of us mourn in our church
The briars are ripping and grown men are tripping
But nothing will deter their search.

Nan, KS, Seymour, Cpat, hoot & Sunshine... I thank you all so very much. I didn't write this to post... it was just blonde thinking. The debris field extends all the way to my Dad's... I know those woods, those lakes, those people... they'll find whatever is there to be found, but it's not an easy task either emotionally or physically.

I live just a few miles from JSC and what was a big sign welcoming visitors last week is now an altar of remembrances... a city's outpouring of grief for their own.

Toe encouraged me to post this... I thank you all for receiving it so kindly.

some will search...the rest of us will, mourn, pray, and some will turn rhymes into tributes, saying what we all are feeling.
I'm glad Toe told ya to post yours.

suthern girl...for once Toe is right. And thank you for the tribute. Well done.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

(tears fall down my cheeks) Why bother searching, we all know the tragedy and just to see the sad remains of the craft is a heartbreaking sight as it is! (sad sigh) This is powerfully expressed, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Suthern, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

A sad but truly amazing write. I felt like I was clawing my way through the thicket.

God bless those dedicated men and women who are so diligently searching.

I loved the viewpoint you confronted this tragedy with, Southern. Your vivid imagery describing the density of the area led up to the stark visuals of those searching. Written with dignity and caring ... really well done, indeed.

Best wishes,
/Kit

Larry: Toe is ALWAYS right... at least in this gal's book! *G* Thank you very much!!

JM, Bal, Enchantress, NewEnglandazurlu, Martie, Marsha, garysgirl, PS and Kit: Please forgive me for not thanking you individually... your responses touch me so very much I honestly lack words... and I'm immensely grateful to each of you. Thank you... so much.

M'toe: I thank you for reading... I sincerely appreciate that you did. But "why bother searching?" However heartbreaking such a search undoubtedly is, how could we NOT search? Certainly we bother because knowing a tragedy happened isn't enough unless we plan to abandon space travel... we must know WHY so that whatever happened won't happen again - future astronauts must be protected as fully as possible. But even more importantly, we bother because we can't just leave human remains where they landed. Even if we were willing to leave questions unanswered and leave debris in yards and fields and turn our backs on the space program, seven PEOPLE died Saturday morning. We owe them every shred of human decency and respect we can provide... and that prohibits us from even considering leaving them to the varmints because it hurts so damn much to find them. However grisly the task, they deserve this search!!

Please forgive the soap box, folks... this wound is raw.
