I left that burg battered But it was the shock of that clipping And looking at a face that looked like me That had really ached. The old truck started on the first turn And I found a note on the seat, “replaced the coil wire.” Scribbled neatly but unsigned. South… Anywhere but here With a cold wind and the deeper chill Of an obituary notice I didn’t stop long For a couple of days I’d pull over and grab an hour of sleep Wake with a black and white image On my mind Then drive. I ended up on the third day In Montana and stopped at a local place To grab a bite and a beer then think about a bed. Barkeep was friendly enough, Beer was cold and food hot So I ordered another brew and listened to locals Talk about calves and the late freeze Fuel prices and Iraq Grey Mouse walked in just as I was rising to leave. I have to tell you I was rattled And I know he saw me Cause I felt that strong hand on my elbow And saw the look in his eyes But I decided to pull his trick And ducked out the back I didn’t sleep in a bed that night but heard Drums in every tar strip between Montana and Wyoming |

the beat of this is sonorous, indeed... and I am glad the grasp of this hasn't quite left the gasp of us, yet. |
