It gets hot in west Texas
And even the cactus look for shade
When August rolls around
With her dun colored grass

The roads there can trick you
They seem to go straight forever
then you’ll find yourself
with a side winding tour down
an arroyo that holds nothing
but dust.

I remembered that this time
And saved myself a few hundred
In crumpled fender as well as
A couple of new tires.

Last time, was another story
And if that cute redhead not come along
And stopped to see if I needed help
I’d sure had along sore walk
Back to town that day.

She said she lived round there
And hated to see the new folks
The ones who didn’t understand
About cows or family
Settling everywhere
They could find a drink

I told her I was just passin through
But I understood

She dropped me at the station
And told me Ole John would fetch my truck
I thanked her and offered her a few bucks for the trouble
She shook her head no…and told me
“One doesn’t take Salt for granted.”
“You may need that and me, I got plenty.”

Well..the old truck took two days
So this time I was being careful
But I wondered if I was to make the same mistake
Would I also see that red head.
Figured it was worth it to bend a fender
If I could.

Your imagery ROCKS...and just look at you...
your muse is on fire and WE will just keep fanning the flames and keep warm in the heat.
keep em coming...its gonna be a long cold winter

Redheads are awesome.

I haven't smiled this big in a while. Thank you.

I was once a dismounted travler in West Texas, but wasn't so lucky to meet that redhead.  However, I opine that redheads in general are worth a fender or two.  Nice job.  KJ

West Texas has just enough spicey "hot" to make the landscape and the people interesting. I'm enjoying the stories you've created,.....looking forward to more.
