It had been a while
Since I had sat in Jake’s place
Drinking a cold one
And I had the urge to see Texas
So I figured I’d drop in him
And see if he wanted to travel.

Jake wasn’t there
When I pulled in around 9
And the barmaid
said he wouldn’t be back
till middle of next week
something about a horse
he just had to have.

I thanked her
Ordered a plate of enchiladas
And a cold one
And sat there staring
Out the dust streaked glass
Onto a street of old pickups
And adobe

She brought the food
And laughed, “You don’t remember me.”
“Do you?”

I looked up at her and smiled,
“Katy”

Her grin widened
As did the pupils of her green eyes.

“Where you staying?” she asked.
“Your place I guess.” I grinned back at her.

“You going to wait for Jake to get back?”

“Depends,” I replied,” How’s your cooking these days?”

“You always know there something good to eat at my place.”
She laughed with a wicked gleam.

I never did make Texas,
but I learned green eyes
And red hair
Look mighty fine
In the morning.

Capt. Ron, I'm glad that you're back into your story-telling, too.....

And......I won't  EVEN  comment on what kind of meal the green-eyed lady cooked up for you. Must've been really good, though, to keep you from going on to Texas!?!

Sy... nah.... just telling tales..

Sunshine... well.. felt the urge to see some desert..and the only way I could do that and get a plate of Mexican food was write it..

Jake and I got back into town
a day earlier
than expected
as the look on Katy’s face
reflexively betrayed.

She hadn’t known
how she was going to get herself
out of this one,
had only thought she had
one more day.

Clatter of breakfast rush
a second before,
silence replaced, or
was it only in my mind?
I felt the descent
seconds before
it began to make sense.

I hadn’t noticed the truck
with out of state plates
parked across the street
when we pulled up.

In a town where nothing changes
it’s easy not to notice
when the ripples
of a slow, easy river
shift against the moon.

It’s easy not to notice
until you see it in her eyes.

Capt Hair,

I enjoyed your piece very much. Here's the other side.

Most days are the same
  around here
You can smell the grease
from the ham and bacon cooking
on the old iron grill that
stands in the back behind the counter

The boys come in early for a cup
of java that will put hair on any
  man's chest
Helps em through the morning till
they can down a cold can of ale
in the hot afternoon

I know them, most by name
they kid me all the time
Started working here in high school
when my mama took ill and daddy
couldn't work cause he hurt his back
  at the mill
A familiar story from most around these
  small pasty towns

Times have changed
I've had my share of blushing
I was young and in my heyday
  considered a pretty one
I was sassy then and the boys, though
they dished it, out could take it back
Tongue and cheek
was the game and I admit
I enjoyed it

You can imagine my surprise
When I brought over his plate
Eyes that danced and smiled in the dark
They were what I used to call bedroom eyes
He was still a hansome son of a gun
I recognized that grin right off the bat

No, this was not going to just another day
  at old Jake's
I could feel my knees get weak

I sure hope I made my bed this morning..

Ron,

Well, this sure made me hungry..... grinning here.......must be those enchiladas! Love the story and still haven't made it to archives to look up your other work....if it is anything like this it will be entertaining...

Enjoyed this a great deal. What a creative thread this is turning into; you do have a way of inspiring others.

Oh I just enjoyed this so much, isn't there a way you can turn all this into a longer story.  I have not had a real "meat and potatoes" kind of story to sink my teeth into for so long that this was like eating one potatoe chip, and now I want the entire bag.  You were all great ahd see what your muse brought out in those folks?  Fantastic!
