The old truck just grunted, And so did I when the barman Grabbed my collar and proceeded To put my head up against the windshield.. “What you doing with that letter?” he asked in a none too kind tone that told me he wasn’t likely to listen if I told him to go away. He fumbled with the door And decided I would come out through the window just fine instead. It was sort of like being born again. A tight squeeze out a small hole Then someone slapping you. I don’t know when she walked out But there she stood Red headed and bare armed Yelling at the barkeep to stop. He let me go And I’m sure I fell with grace But I don’t remember much more Until I woke up on flowered sheets With no place to put my face That didn’t feel like Iambe’s eyes Were cutting me again. The red head was there Sitting in a chair holding the letter Waiting for me to come around. I didn’t mind her having the letter, It was the 45 I saw I her lap That made me not want breakfast. “Who are you?” she asked in voice that seemed as cold as the Northwest Territory in January. “Just a drifter.” I mumbled around a split lip. “Where did you get this letter, and what were you planning on doing with it?” She sleeted at me. Well best I could, I told her about Old Grey Mouse And how he had told me he wanted it delivered But couldn’t do it himself About how stupid I was to head that way Trying to deliver it for him. “You read this?” She hailed. “No Ma’am” I mumbled watching her hand Edge over to the 45 Leaving me to hope she didn’t have Any nervous twitches. She picked up the gun And laid it on the table next to her then opened the letter. She read it what must have been a couple of times And pulled out an old photo Folded between the pages. “You got a smoke and a light?” she asked me in a late winter tone. “Yeah, in my pocket over there.” I answered. She rose from the chair And walked over to my jacket Pulled out both and went back to the chair She had been in with the gun. She lit two, One for me that she handed to me with a lean That gave me a view any other time would have made me think About how pretty that white skin looked in moonlight With just a sheen of sweat giving it a glow. then hers, and held the lighter to the letter Letting the flames catch a corner, burn up to her fingers, then dropped it Into a trash can. The picture she stuffed in her pocket. “Sorry for the bumps.” She said in an April voice that hinted At a late frost regret. “perhaps I can make it up to you later.” she rose to leave the room. “I’ll be back with some coffee.” [This message has been edited by Cpat Hair (01-24-2003 03:31 PM).] |

I KNEW there was a good reason NOT to read that letter...she would have had to do him in! |

![]() (sigh) The red-hair reflecting the sunlight could sure start a fire, you just have to know when to read or you might feel the heartburn! (big huggsssssss) This is marvelous, sweet friend, I feel there's something else buried in the ink of that text, between the lines of it all, I love it, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Ron, thank you for sharing! ![]() May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton "Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..." |

Now there's a combination... a red head with a large hand gun...I don't think I'd notice if she had red toe nails, Ron...I think Grey Mouse should have tried e-mailing instead.. believe in what your heart feels... |

Okay I have parked for the night, so I am just going to sit here and wait this out. This is excellent. Would you please do a story for the prose section (a long one) and as my little one says, "pahleeeezze?" ~ The soul lies buried in ink that does not flow ~ |

and this is what I'm talkin' bout-- here you set up suspense for the reader-- and make us beg for the last... (this works for me tho, as I am an incurable reader of last page-first) ![]() |

A red head with a gun Don't make for much fun Where the road you run Says the words for one And the glue don't stick worth spit Good thing Grey Mouse sealed that envelope with rubber cement. Still in the back of your pickup lookin' for #4. [This message has been edited by Andrew Scott (01-25-2003 12:01 AM).] |

now we'll never know what she read...unless, being a red-head, she beguiles you and then you beguile her, till she breaks. Whether on the shoal or on the shore, |
