The smile is laughter's deceptive sister
curve of the mouth to break a blister
when a gentleman receives a womanly consent
he bows to the curvature where mouths are bent.

If in the romantic films it preceded the kiss
in the dramatic ones it succeeded the miss...
a mismatch among fluttering hearts,
a flicked switch to cause a start,
under the halo of a streetlight lamp
a cigarette blond would display this stamp
lovers would have been more easily connected...
tormented souls calmed...smiles unaffected?

what of a search for a pleasant mate
what could be a more convenient bate
but upward turns at ends of a mouth...
was common company in the deep south

upscale daughters needed no recruiter
to win smiles of hired southern suiter
but love would hastily be scorned
swiftly carted from house to slaughter
Big Daddy would not lose his daughter
didn't matter what thoughts rang then
how pleasantries were expressed... or when
standards were raised
over what lesser equals could do
romance was affected
smiles still pervaded the human zoo.

Karilea,

Hello inquisative mind. Thinking of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof...how Liz rebuffed ber Dad's advise on who she should choose, on how she encountered Paul and told him of Daddy's news..I remember the smiles
they had....you like it?
