I've been working on this since Christmas, trying to do it justice...John this one's for you love.

While I was just a child small
I looked up to my brother tall
more than 15 yrs older than me
he was everything a man should be
strong, big hearted, the rock on which I leaned
Many words of wisdom learned as I knelt there at his knees

years went by and we both moved on
still my brother John was the rock I leaned upon
I was 16 the year he called on Christmas Eve
the snow was bad, the wind was worse
be home in 3 hours, my sister's heart relieved

1 hour
2 hours
3 hours then 4 more
thanking God I ran full speed upon the knocking at my door
not my brother as I'd hoped at last
instead a man with a policeman's badge
the worst fears of my heart confirmed
as he sorrowfully reported John would not return
half remembered snowy visions as I drove away full speed
only to end up wrapping myself around a tree
John had met the same end as I
only he had not survived

a trucker fell asleep
just to cross the center line
they say my John was still alive
(how his seatbelt locked and held him no one could contrive)
when his truck burst into flames

I woke up three weeks later in the ICU
to my sister placing in my hand
" a charm John bought for you"
a golden dragon on a chain
the only thing to survive the flames
24 kt gold sparkled in the light of predawn
John he was my golden dragon
even after he was gone
I keep it with me always
on a chain across my heart
to remind me that God took John's life
but made a way for us
to never be apart

It seems you've done your brother justice,
not only in the writing of this piece,
but in finding peace inside.

In the form of a Golden Dragon,
and in other ways.

Thank you for sharing this heart-felt piece.

Thank you for sharing this part of who you are. It is rewarding to realize how mysteriously God works in our lives. I appreciate your talent and ability to show us that. And, I am very glad for your decision. It added to all of us. Thank you again.

Hugs, Pat
