---Protect Us From The Protectors--- I sit her getting older Remembering the days Of having more individual freedoms Being allowed to drink beer at 18 Considered adult enough to be drafted The Vietnam War was taking us on For we had no choice except Canada Now I do not know what a minor is For you have fourteen years old adults Being tried in a court system for murder Yet take the same person at twenty Being caught drinking a beer After fighting for our countries freedom Having killed the enemy under orders They are minor in possession What is really an adult now? Can someone by law be considered A minor at thirty, forty? Yet be an adult at ten, eight! US Senators have age requirements Must citizenship also So by law now We can ban the use of alcohol to 21 Yet cigarettes are allowed at 19 Which cause even greater harm What other things can the protectors ban? Protecting us from the evils of society I am sure they can learn a lesson from Iran We have do-gooder who know say Let us protect our college students For they still are minors And do not have the right To live for themselves Enforcing mandatory rules Of forced on-campus housing And forced fees like for For university approved eating places In the name of education, religion or morality People choose to dilute The freedoms of choice Taking the decision upon themselves In the name of self proclaimed protectors If we have enough of them We will suffocate to the point Others will always make the choices for us Dictators who force us into submission If you take all the rules That are supposed to protect us And stack them all together A communist nation would have it easier Yet they cry out It is for the good of the nation What happened to having a free choice? So we now fight a war with minors With allies who soldiers are adults So as may of our boys will die To never achieve legal manhood I say that they at least be declared Men and women Before being laid to rest Thought: If a man or woman decides to serve our country, then by federally mandated law they should assume the role of being an adult in the eyes of the law. Let them fight for us as equals and not as boys and girls. Thought: Alcohol can have its bad effects, but to set up special rules for it, allows others to add other rules for adulthood. I think that upon completion of high school or 19 that a person again, should become an adult in the eyes of the law. ---Protect Us From The Protectors--- D.Lester Young 1/13/2003 Tuscaloosa, AL Copyright © D.Lester Young (White Eagle poetry) |

Goodness, this poem has an enormous amount of truth in it. I wish that our law-makers would wake up to these truths. "Love makes the world go around" |
