Before the Quiet Dawning

I stepped into the blackness
of this winter morning

a tiny, solitary light
shone silently in heaven’s abyss

as I reveled in the promise
of a break in the clouds,

a dog echoed my delight
as it greeted the morning’s wakening

it was not a sound of mourning,
no, it was a rejoicing

my heart joined his
excited about the light to come
at day’s breaking

yet now, I sit, watching
pockmarks of rain form upon the patio

beneath the gray bowl
that envelops us

it had been a star or a planet
that was only teasing

or maybe, just maybe
it was giving assurance

that beyond the cloak
it was still there

though unseen,
it did not make it unreal

a statement of
“keep the faith...

I Am real."

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

Virginia, hope you don't mind...
this seems particularly appropriate to bring back up
on this Sunday...

Thank you.
