four a.m. has got to be
the loneliest time god made

the red lines in their cruel
mechanical rigidity
burning my teary retinas

all too aware of my
tragically twin-sized bed
made for one body
without allowing for

the possibility of another

but then perhaps
the possibility would only
be harder to face

cold sheets
no body
to warm them

four a.m. is empty and dark and angry
the lines perpendicular
       and parallel
all at once mock me with their flawless
            natural union

four a.m, is discontent
it has no lovers
running passionate fingers through matted hair
it is without terrycloth
robes and slippers and sunrises

it will never know contentment

four a.m. is insomnia
     red eyes
          bursting capillaries
                  nyquil
                       and trips to the bathroom
four a.m. wears pajama pants
      that are too big
              and rumple uncomfortably
and border too hot and just plain unbearable

four a.m.’s pillow won’t stay in the position
         it is fluffed in
               over and over and

four a.m. is sighs
      and rolling eyes
             frustration
                    anticipation
and absolutely

nothing

four a.m. is nothingness
silence long past serenity

no light
no noise
just the red lines
and me

keeping each other company through another 1200 seconds.

Hi and welcome to Passions.  I enjoyed this, as I can empathize very well.  My usual bedtime is around 5 am, if I'm lucky.  However, I don't spend those hours trying to get to sleep.  I spend them painting, drawing, or reading.  Again, welcome, glad to have you join our family of poets.

The stars will shine when I am gone,
the earth will turn on as before,
the gulls, still race along the shore,
the morning star, still kiss the dawn

ok - so you were watching me early this morning, eh? *sigh*

i know this, in entirety (according to the way i read it, of course). the wistfulness, the frustration, the desire, the lack of fulfillment - all physical and emotional, and not a little mental. it's a curse, in some ways, one that is hard - if not impossible - to overcome.

ok, i ramble as usual. hope you find peacful dreams tonight - thank you for your well-wrought words.

Chris

Amazing how many of us have seen 4AM.
Enjoyed the perspective, the way you highlighted the physical appearance numbers in contrast to your emotions.
Fluffing pillows just isn't a substitute, is it?
