Autumn brings such memories Of childhood in my small hometown We all felt free to run wild all day Getting pink, red or nut brown No place was off limits to us No one cared where we went to play The world was our childhood domain This was where we wanted to stay We were neither boy nor girl Innocent, we were colorblind Religion didn’t matter at all Unless mom controlled our mind We had a special secret friend He was the one kid we knew That would get loads of trouble In the suburbs of Kalamazoo His name was Edward Kingston Everyone called him Crazy Eddie And we learned a lot about tolerance That last summer we all lived free Eddie’s aunt came to visit him So he spent more time with us She was prim and proper and Tended to make a fuss We were playing knights that day When we saw police light in flash This oddity was so exciting to us We set off running in a dash Eddie’s aunt was on the porch Her hands upon her hips Next to her was Will the cop A smile upon his lips In his hand he held a baggie Inside was something furry Eddie stopped and blushed up Tried to explain it in a hurry “it’s Malcolm in that bag you see” Eddie squeaked in a voice real high “I wasn’t sure what to do Poor Malcolm was gonna die!” “I thought if I froze him the vet could make him well I didn’t mean no harm at all But I’m in trouble, I can tell” Eddie’s aunt was nodding The cop was laughing hard Poor Eddie was almost in tears As we gathered in his yard He never really meant any harm He was smart in his own way You couldn’t stay mad at Eddie That’s what we learned that day. We helped Eddie bury his pet As Eddie’s aunt just stomped inside That was the last summer together Before poor Eddie died [This message has been edited by Poet deVine (10-17-2002 09:23 AM).] |

PdV, I'm telling you that was fabulous. What a sad ending to a perfectly wonderful story. That flowed so smooth. Thanks for the awesome memory. ![]() If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |

PoetDevine...this is a magnificent work you have done. In my mind's eye, I could see you chidren running and playing innocently....with no prejudice or anything else clouding up your minds. It sounded like little Eddie was a wee bit more "playful" than the others. I enjoyed this , as I do all of your work. Thanks for sharing. Love To All, Ethel...garysgirl |

She's back. ![]() You have woven a tapestry here m'sis. Every verse fell into the next with mastery storytelling without the predictablity of obvious. I loved the change of tone...and the ending has your trademark impact of irony. now? SUBMIT this....grins and winks WONDERFUL |

THank you all for your kind words...the title came to me first, then the story. And it's a work of fiction as most of my stuff is... ![]() |

I am just wondering if "Ferret Pops" came before "Otter Pops". ![]() Thank you. What light through yon window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. |
