World Travel

Stirring bones
in the midst of the smouldering fire,
the old woman looked up at me
and cackled.
Her lined face,
lit by the yellow leaping flames,
grimaced in savage delight.
I think she was a gypsy,
or possibly a bruja.
I didn’t like the air in this musty cottage,
something sour had died and decayed in the wall.

I had thought I was looking for a taste of the real Mexico.

It wasn’t arroz con pollo.

The contrast between the proud, lordly mountain,
with it’s bracing zephyrs,
and this broken-down, smelly, valley village
was ludicrous.

She gabbled something in a voice
that was so high and shaky, and accented,
that I couldn’t make out the words.
Muerta del something or other. Alma de what?
Okay, I get it. The real Mexico doesn’t speak Spanish.

I’m more a foreigner here than in LA.

She stared up at me and winked one watery eye,
then turned back to her fire.

And stirred the bones.

WOW! I loved the imagery here, I pictured it all as I was reading.

I saw the difference of LA and Mexico a few years back, not like you penned, but what a difference just crossing the border. You'd think two lands touching would be somewhat similar eh?

A most excellent write.

Nan darling heart this is utterly utterly wonderful When I think you have reached the peak of perfection you then write something that is so perfect, so well written and so alive that I find my heart sighing wishfully, I know I couldn’t write this I wish I could . As always darling heart your writing is exceedingly good. You of course know I adore this don’t you? Mmmmm I do!

Love and warm stuff

Breathe through the heat of our desire
Thy coolness and they balm
Let sense be dumb let flesh retire
Speak through the earthquake wind and fire

Dark Angel, thanks. I was going for a scene, enigmatic and somewhat dark, with a contrast not only of cultures, but of ideas about cultures.

Marsha, how am I ever going to know when you like something? You have that English reserve, you know. So understated, always.

Cpat-thanks! I'm a storyteller at heart.

Nan, you said in the comment that you "love to paint pictures with words", well you certainly did so here. I also felt like I was reading a story, too. Excellent writing, Lady.
