It is cold
when she is quiet
The air is still
Stars shine
but do not sparkle
Birds do not sing
only squawk
at one another
My ears are so alone
they ring in emptiness

I was drawn to this because of your name and the title..
I know I will enjoy the read when I see your name..
and the title?
..it's what my kids always say to me when I start to sing too loudly.
This is sad..hauntingly sad to me.
But ever so wonderfully penned poet sir.

The stillness is deafening...it speaks louder than words screamed into one's ears or EMBLAZONED across a page.

If you listened very carefully, you may hear  the song that your heart is trying to sing.

~ Whispering willows are softly speaking of their love for you...May the sounds of nature keep you company and give you comfort.

E.
Right you are, haunting.  Curious, isn't it, how another can do that to you.  Glad you enjoyed.

D.A.
Certainly, add it to your shelves, I'm flattered.  And the last two lines?  Well, I think I learned that from her, she does it so well.

Toe.
Lower state of late.  And your beard?  You cut it?  Awww, too bad.  Bet you looked good in it !  Thanks for stoppin' by.

E.A.
Thanks for your sweet response !  I'm smiling.  And they do, they do.

Sometimes the silence can be deafening.
I enjoyed this powerful piece.
Well done.

Krawdad....I didn't age as eloquently as you have....LOL....I really looked old...turned gray fairly young....maybe cuz of the lifestyle I led?....My beard wasn't as long as yours...but my hair was at least as long. Down here in Alabama in the late 60's early 70's you had to be a drug dopin hippie communist or something worse to have hair like I did.....and I swear, I wasn't a communist!!!!

Thank you.  Glad you enjoyed.

Separated at birth?  Found my first white hair when I was in highschool.  Started this "shag" the day before I said goodby to Uncle Sam in the late 60's so I know all about the heavy hair prejudice, it was alive and well in the rural north too.  Small world bit, I remember 'Bama, I was at Ft. McClellen for awhile.
Oh, and this time of year I do get mistaken for someone else, by a certain age group.  I try not to tease them, but enjoy it.

I would think you could be mistaken for William Lee with the Oakridge Boys too?...I worked for the Allman Brothers band before I went to Vietnam....think that's where my gray came from...

I'm appreciating the depth which resonates below the simple appearance of your style...  hard to describe, but very cool...

Toe,
Yup, I get that too, and questions about the Harley I must surely own (but don't).  There have even been Walt Whitman comments (now THAT'S scary!).

MVS & Cpat,
Thanks guys, glad you enjoyed.  Some call it laconic, which gives me pause, but I take no offense.

This was the first poem that caught my eye on this page.  Do not sing??? sounds like something my boss used to tell me when he thought I was having too much of a good time entertaining grocery shoppers where I was a cashier.  This piece put a spike thru my heart.  I know exactly the kind of silence to which you allude. I hope your vigil of silence ends soon.

Love, Light and Peace,

Sherry

Cherish the good memories of the past and look forward to the adventure called Tomorrow. But above all... be kind to yourself today.

Thanks again, Toe, and who knows, with the mega budget cut around here I might have a lot of time on my hands soon and will take the southern trip I've been promising myself.  I'd be looking for poets for sure.

M,
Actually, mine do ring, but not to be mistaken for a phone.  And hey, if you really need that phone to ring, I've got this cheap phone card . . . ;-)
Thanks for stopping by.

K,
Thanks, and good to see you here.  Hope you are doing ok.

Sherry,
Thanks for your comments.
(Darn grumbly old boss!)
