A Love of Clowns

Marjory swept into our house,
small and fragile with age.
Silvery hair in a tight bun,
straight bangs strangely girl-like;
bright in handmade vests
and beaded jewelry.

We saw her at Thanksgiving and Christmas,
arriving with a batch of red and green candies
my brother and I never ate.
After dinner, she’d lay down,
a short nap before driving home
in her dawn-tinted Caddy.

She lived in a small house by the bay.
When she died, Mother handled her will.
Marjory’s faded furnishings,
crocheted blankets and rose-trimmed
dishes were sold off one Saturday -
the windows thrown open,
gulls screeching nearby.

As the last of Marjory’s
possessions were carted away,
we went through a box of her papers.
There, we found a stack of love letters
written ten years prior.
It was a touching
if embarrassing assortment,
accenting a long love affair -
intimate moments spent
at a time when Marjory
would have been in her seventies.

All of the letters were signed:
Love, Emmet.

Marjory’s porcelain clown collection went to Mother.

(big hugggssssss) Oh Corinne, this is soooooooo beautifully heartfelt, sweet friend, I can't help but go in tears when I read scrapbooks with my grandparents just so I can see through their hearts and know them so much better as they continue to send love to everyone! (sigh) This is wonderful, sweet friend, God Bless You and her and her mother, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Corinne, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Corrine, I simply love the way you story-tell
in your poetry. I can almost see the events going on.
It's so realistic. Thanks for sharing with us.
