COMMUNION OUTSIDE ANTWERP

for two years
we romanced Europe
and youth,
we were
as good as
we had ever been;
we would never
be that good again,
we left 'us' there~~

those Saturdays when
we drove without direction
were my favorite,
I remember
one special Saturday
in early spring,
we woke early
packed light
and drove north from Antwerp

when I saw the tulip fields
I could not breathe,
as far as we could see
colors were alive,
curiously erotic
and intoxicating;
I said, 'now I know
where rainbows are born'
(you just smiled,
I don't think you
ever understood
that part of me)

your timing was perfect,
your fingers
slid along the edge of my shorts,
you smiled and said, 'here?'
I nodded

at the edge of a tulip field
somewhere between
Antwerp and Amsterdam
we spread a blanket,
you poured wine
I fed you cheese and grapes

we inhaled colors
and each other,
it was a communion--
you,
the sweet cream,
I,
the honey~~

"I am a sky where spirits live.
Stare into this deepening blue,
while the breeze says a secret."
