A falling star....
racing toward an invisible layer
of Earth’s blanket....

If only this small meteor could think.
Would it come to earth on wings,
perhaps a parachute....

Or,
would it go for the gusto of the gasps
heard from below, as the eyes of children
sparkle with the treasures
of a universe?

Imagine,
being that small bit of rock, part of a
comet’s tail, no longer riding the train
as it’s mother ship soars on into
the cosmos.

Would one want to leave,
being tugged gently toward a
fiery death?

Faster than a speeding bullet with only
the power imposed by invisible fingers
pulling steadily downward...
Feeling the heat, the eventual flame...

Then.....
the silence, darkness overwhelming all else
as the beauty of a billion years is gone
in the blink of an eye.

Leaving behind a legacy of memories
that children might once smile, once
remember a moment...

For a lifetime....

but...if the laws of physics are correct, matter is never destroyed, only convertedinto another form...and the form of a memory ( while not in the realm of physics)
is a great one to be transformed into...

Barry

My husband went out last night in the early hours of the morning to watch the sky with his blankey.  As he watched, he remembered his boyhood with his grandmother in another back  yard looking at the stars...some shooting.

Your poem touched the child's wonder at the universe, and gave an interesting view.  Much enjoyed!

This is great. I'll never view a falling star again without remembering this poem. Maybe they are simply little gifts from God, He knowing the renewed excitement and thrill everytime we see one. I'm not going to comment on the fact you just about gave one a mind....I will keep it simple, and enjoy initial reaction, ~seeing it~ in the words of this poem.

Thanks for this, makes me grin.

Warm Regards, Pat

Barry, every time I read your poetry, I am
simply amazed. You can write on any subject
with such knowledge and feeling. You also make
the readers feel that we are right there
watching whatever you're speaking up. It takes
a lot of talent, friend, to be able to accomplish
this. Thanks so much for sharing your talents with us.

I saw the morning star
this early early dawn
I am so glad it still hangs there
for all to see...

There is a sensual undertone to this, Magnus, don't know if it was intentional or not!

An inspirational write, too. Yes, we should live like our flame is about to burn out.
How exciting that would be.

Now, look what you've done! I will be thinking of you for the rest of my life--every time I see a shooting star! This could ruin my love life!

I can picture it now...the stage is set for a romantic evening and I'm in his arms --we gaze into the star-studded black heavens and a brilliant light streaks the midnight skies---and my lover asks: "What are you thinking of this very second?"---and I, being ever so truthful, turn to him and say, "Barry"......

See what I mean?!? tehe

I loved this poem and I saved it!
