A Journey in Time and Space

Up here
suspended in the clouds,
hurtling through empty space without moving,
frozen in time,
petrified in this diamond air above the clouds,
I cannot escape this intrepid burning
of my hateful soul.
And I see the dark weight of the future
pouring down upon me
in a torrent of liquid wrath.
In a dark alley somewhere
when I am deserted
and finally
alone
I can no longer protect myself
from this inevitable fate.
Can no longer avoid it or
delay it.
Can not push it into the shadowy corners
of my mind
and let it rot in spiderwebs and dust.
Can no longer drop it in the dirt beneath my feet
and grind it with the heel of my shoe
pulverizing it until
the fragments are so minute
that I can overlook them.
Can no longer toss it up there among the stars
and forget about it as another
far-fetched silver dream.
Yes, and when I am
Finally
Alone
It rushes to me.
And I can’t bear the uncertainty that this future holds.
