"Begun To Grow"

Moved in next to Old man Jenkins
And Dekota last week it seems.
Stopped me in the hall and said "Son,
My body's getting kinda meen,
Would you mind showing Dekota
All the hip places around here?"
Shook his hand said: "No problem, sir"
Can't believe that it's been a year!

We sat down and he started talking
When the wife died, the house got sold.
It's just me and Dekota now
But son I have gotten too old,
Walking up those long iron stairs
Is just like climbing a mountain.
As every day's moving along
I'm getting closer to the end.

Then he laid down his old man glasses,
Put his wrinkled hand on my shoulder.
And said:
"Curtains go down on even the best,
You will understand when you're older.
We get born, we grow and then we fade,
You see son, that's just the way life goes.
But you've no reason to be afraid,
Because son, you've just begun to grow.
You've only just begun to grow..."

Popped by old man Jenkins each day
For Dekota and quick tale,
Showed me his uniform from 'nam
Where he saved a platoon from jail.
He would dug, he would jump around
Acting out long passed sceneries,
With a smile on his face he'd say:
"Thank God I still have my mem'ries".

With sweat pearls rolling down his face
He'd say: "Just what I needed son
Glad you stick around even if
it's for this old son of a gun"
"you're the grandpa' I never had"
I said, with tears in my young eyes
"Wow, don't know what to say" he said,
"But let me give you one advice"...

Dekota's living with me now,
A young family with two kids moved in next door.
Dekota's tail's between her legs,
Miss him too, girl, without him 'round it's such a bore.
But I will always remember,
Like yesterday I remember...

When he laid down his old man glasses,
Put his wrinkled hand on my shoulder.
And said:
"Curtains go down on even the best,
You will understand when you're older.
We get born, we grow and then we fade,
You see son, that's just the way life goes.
But you've no reason to be afraid,
Because son, you've just begun to grow.
You've only just begun to grow..."

This was really good, it brought a tear to my eye. Good job.

Wow..this was so sweet. Sad yes, but still sweet. Great job.
