I step into character
I feel what they feel
I am them, not myself
I put on a mask

Isn't that what I always do
when I am not playing a charater?
A mask that I put on everyday before school
that allows me to roll with the punches

My character for school is this
The shy, funny girl
who lets her friends step over her
never getting mad, because I am the nice one

Step off the stage
get out of character
go back to life
the lights are off

Get off the bus
no more friends, school
just family
my real life

My life is a stage
constantly striving to perfect my character
the lights on me
I have to stay in charactr, that way I am never hurt

I like this, Mal, definitely different from your usual, but I really enjoyed it. Makes you think... I think most all people put on some sort of a mask for different occasions, even if they don't realize they're doing it. Thanks for posting!

....a think-piece with just enough imagery to keep it from falling into the think-piece trap of telling rather than showing. Very nice.

I'm teen times three, and this the first one I've read in this forum. Glad I started with yours.

Wow...I liked this. And I can totally relate. It's just like sometimes you wish you could just "remove your mask" and show everyone the real you. Really nice write.
