Tennis is Love Six days a week, 10 hours a day Some called it work: I called it play With a choice of summer and a deep desire Learning tennis in snow-white attire. I spoke like a child and acted like a fool There on green clay, I was about to be schooled. As our team traveled the state, played the best Lost my share but also rose to the test My Dad, who never played, said he couldn’t lose I took that bet, wondering which tactic he’d choose But it wasn't what I expected, as shots hit the net He just stood his ground, grinding out each get. In my worse mistakes, he had some comment: wise He had wisdom for which I had no reply It was close, probably closer than he liked But I felt like my whole future was spiked. No matter how good you think you are there is always someone better I learned that lesson in spades right down to the last letter. The best doesn't always win, and the worst doesn’t always lose It's not in the talent and its not in the shoes. It's in the heart Winning is all about heart Off the court, or on Confidence is where to start but humility's where its won. He saw deep into my eyes that day I loved him all the more for it Roughing my hair he praised my play A humbled mask: and I wore it. I learned more that day, than ten years in any school Can't survive on talent for it's only just a tool winning is showing the world what you’re made of Sports are metaphors for life; and Tennis is all about Love [This message has been edited by ShadowRider (10-09-2002 11:25 PM).] |

This is so true, Jeff.... I remember my late first husband having a fight with one of my sons about that very same subject... He tried to teach them that being a good sport was better than being good at sports... You did a real sporting job on this one ~ hugs from a sporty chipmunk Lyra |

Jeff, if this is what can be learned by playing tennis with a dad...Then let's all get down to the store, get a racket...and go get wise...and humble...for that is what life is about...wisdom and humility...go hand in hand... |

(big hugggssssss) Yes, the sports heroes I most admire are those who give it their best with heart and give to others with humility, like Kerri Strug and Jackie Robinson! I believe those like Mike Tyson or atheletes who hurt others or are gluttonous are no true sportsmen, sweet friend, this is well-said, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Jeff, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton "Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..." |
