There are no handles underwater, clinking surf against the coast screwed back in for use. There is no wire underwater, barbing sun too far to reach, sinking into dawn. There are no gunshots underwater. No charged lines of reddened flags to impress the waves. There are no black doors underwater, coded ideas locked in sleep, sand in pyre's pile. There is no cordwood underwater. If you stand there, Senator, you might see their limbs. There is no music underwater, rich as song's unoffered rest. Burning notes in score. There are no letters underwater. Ink fades, oh my memory. Ink fades fast, I learned. http://www.salon.com/ent/movies/feature/2002/10/01/leni_riefenstahl/index.html |

Interesting poem. I followed the link you provided. I take it you saw the film and were inspired. I regret that I have not seen the film so to comment on the content of your poem would be pointless. I do, however, enjoy reading your work, even if I do not respond. Best Regards, INclan |

Hi, INclan. I haven't seen you in a long while, so it's good to see ya again! Anyway, I haven't seen the film. I think this is actually inspired by the timing. I saw Train of Life last night, and then came in this morning to see the above item posted on Salon.com -- so my mind spilled out. It's more about this filmmaker seeing the purity she's striving for, through complete denial of her past and the crimes she was part of. Thanks for readin'. |

The Deustch is what caught my eye. The film stays in the mind. Thank you. What light through yon window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. |

Hi Mike, at first I thought it was about "Swim fan" when I followed the link I felt like an idiot, I haven't seen that Riefenstahl film, though I watched sections of "Olympia" as part of my course in college. A very striking and graphic film, the scene with the runners on the bank is an image that will stick in my mind for a long time, a chilling metaphor for the "superiority" of the third reich. Anyway ranting here, enjoyed the poem, a wonderful piece beautiful and unsettling at the same time. Don't drag the orchestra into this thing |

Thank you both. This was difficult to write, and even more difficult to post. |

Thanks brian. Again, I didn't see the film. I just found it interesting that she became obsessed with the water. Trying to cleanse or purify? I don't know. There's a lot of questions, and, sadly, a lot of history that can not be changed. |

Lovely, I want you to know that this evokes painfully beautiful images; the stark black and white war pictures that haunt you for years after you last see them. The sickness and sadness of human tragedy and denial. *sigh* I can just see people drowning in that water... your tongue's like poison |

Mike "There are no letters underwater. Ink fades, oh my memory. Ink fades fast, I learned" Hauntingly beautiful...left me feeling tragedy and humanity at the same time...even before I went to the link. |

(big hugggssssss) Oh Michael, this feels so sad, sweet friend, I hope now you are rising above the surface and breathing that music and calm reflection! (sigh) My heart goes out to you, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Michael, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Thanks all, for reading and getting out of this poem what you do. No mutedness needed, Sen. |
