I scream out into the darkness “why is this happening??” The night gapes back in silence As I cry out yet again The cries echo through the mountains Until my voice is lost to them I collapse on the ground before me Bitter, worn with a broken spirit My cup of anguish runneth over Leaving a bloody trail through the forest Beyond the trees I hear a howl From my brother the timber wolf His somber cry pierces the black Embedding itself into my very soul I feel his pain within my breast A dull constant ache reverberating throughout He too feels the agony of my hurt As his cry becomes more mournful The light of the full harvest moon Gleams like diamonds in his eyes My throat is scratchy and sore I try to wet it with my canteen But my stomach heaves violently Spewing forth the bile of torment I am too weak to try again So I lay in the dirt of the forest floor Inhaling the mossy scent surrounding me As I pray for death to come quickly I sense a presence before me So I look up to see the wolf before me He sniffs at my hand with curiosity Before laying beside me My brother has come to keep watch Until the break of a new day dawns He shall guard and protect me As he would his own throughout the night I fall asleep exhausted before the wolf No harm befalls me as I slumber As the sun rises the wolf stretches He gives me a long look before walking off I lay there baffled by this Until a short time later he returns Dropping an offering before me I pick it up to realize it’s meat He has brought me nourishment So I may regain my strength I sit up and take a small bite As he looks on at me intently The meat is tender and warm I savor each and every morsel Washing it down with water Left over from my canteen The wolf lowers his head resting beside me I run my fingers through his fur Amazed by its softness and warmth He sighs softly in appreciation We sit while I gather strength For what seems like an eternity Until I feel able to attempt to stand I walk unsteadily, but I trudge on My companion follows behind cautiously Through the clearing I see my cabin Framed by the forest and mountains Awaiting my return from hiking As I unlock the door I turn back The wolf sits at the foot of the steps He awaits invitation to enter in With a hopeful look in his eyes Last night he probably saved my life How I could I deny him such a small reward I smile at him and motion him in He bounds past me and rests on the sofa I laugh as I think how he belongs there For wolves really are not our enemies They are just trying to get by like we are In reality, they are our friends and brothers alike All writing comes |

The song of the wolf is one of peace and contentment, if only we would listen. Thank you. What light through yon window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. |
