Human Zoology

I walked on through the classroom door
A room I’d never seen before
An animal of every sort
In student’s chair with lofty port

Upon each pencil scribbled desk
A quite intriguing college text
Each beast held with it’s paw or hand
“The New Zoology of Man”

Professor Peacock called the roll
And, I the only human soul
Was told there was not one seat more
The peacock pointed to the floor

A pondering question then began
On how to feed the future man
Professor Peacock took a vote
Suggested by a nanny goat

Please raise your hand if you agree
That plants should feed humanity
Then every single paw and hoof
Arose to rafters of the roof

And how will humans then be housed
The animals were quite aroused
“Perhaps a cage would suit their need
And thus we’d manage every feed”

“What splendid thoughts, from hooting owl”
Then wings flapped joy from every fowl
The monkey did a sideways dance
The peacock , feather spreading prance

“Some specimens from every race
All brought together in one place
From every language, every hue
Of olive, bronze, or white or blue”

Then smothered in hyena's laugh
And giggles from a tall giraffe
Both simultaneously insist
Blue people simply don’t exist

I don’t know why I chose this course
Wedged in the shadows of a horse
Not one opinion asked of me
And I’m the one who should be free

I slowly got up off the floor
And proudly walked on out the door
I heard applause from down the hall
“Vaya con Dios“, a parrot’s call

I thought as I was walking out
That animals have too much clout
A peacock prof., a voting horse
Too bad it’s a required course

The zoo is now a peaceful place,
Now running at a calmer pace,
No loud hyenas, they're as quiet as bunnies,
Since we've expelled Toerag, the mischievious monkey.

Love this Liz...good to see ya posting..

A talking horse? Of course, of course.. (sorry I couldn't help it)
This is a really great write! Lots of deep thoughts to ponder written in a delightfully funny manner. Thanks for the laugh.

Oh my! That was a really good poem.

Professor Peacock's stole the show,
and I creep so slow now I must go...
He's holding class explaining life,
and this little worm's needs a wife.

He teaches a moral in his classes.
He puffs his feathers, and adjusts glasses.
Thereis one thing for sure he teaches you,
it's respect for the animals who marched two by two!

Oh Liz this was pricesless and as Sy said I read it once on the surface and printed for the girls, then I went below to make it full of lessons and hence the worm!  Thank you for your talent and the sharing of it.

The most valuable thing you own is a smile, wear it, and share it.

This poem was written for my sister in law who has the deepest regard for animals, and also by a t-shirt my son designed which was a picture of monkeys and bears throwing peanuts over the fence to the humans. Thank you all for you kind comments. To suthrn, I was just going to save you a place, dear. Sharon, thank you for the cute graphics and poem1 LOved it!

Liz, this is just too funny! I love Prof. Peacock and the levels of his class.

Thank you for entertaining me and I've printed it out for my hubby, the zoology guy!

Hugs, Marti

Every now and then take a good look at something not made
with hands -- a mountain, a star, the power of the ocean.
There will come to you wisdom,
