When I was just a little tyke,
I had a red Schwinn Flyer bike,
With monkey bars; banana seat,
I was in heaven, my life complete.
Upon each spoke, a baseball card,
How "Mickey" hummed, when I rode hard,
(Don't rub it in, because I know,
today that card, is worth some dough.)
I rode that bike, both day and night,
Taped to the front, my Dad's flashlight,
Racing down Mulberry street,
Against the wind I would compete,
Past the house of Mary Sue,
Golden hair with eyes of blue,
I’d not wave when I rode by,
She was a girl the reason why,
I’d sneak a peak, or maybe two,
As I whizzed past, that’s what I do,
Pedal faster, show my stuff,
To prove to her that I was tough,
For on my bike I was ten feet tall.
Free as the wind, no cares at all.

Today I thought of red Schwinn bikes,
Of long ago's and little tykes,
Of playing catch, hot summer days,
Secret clubs and hideaways,
(No girls allowed, that was a rule,
'cause we were boys, and we were cool)
Of races down Mulberry street,
Against the wind, it was so neat,
But my bike's no more, and now I'm grown,
It is a car that I now own,
But as I parked at home tonight,
I thought I saw in fading light,
Memories of a little tyke,
Atop a red Schwinn Flyer bike,
With monkey bars; banana seat,
And of a time, life was complete.
But then a voice, it was my wife,
Returning me to present life,
I heard her call, “Dear is that you?”
And I replied, “Yes, Mary Sue.”

Get a book published of your poetry--and I'll buy it!--and copies for my friends and family as well! I love your writing---the nostalgia, the rhythm, the imagery..........................ad infinitum!

Tim - oh, I loved this!! It reminds me of when my hubby likes to talk about his "way cool" bike he had as a boy. He and his buddies flying down the streets. Mustang bikes I think they were called back then. lol. Chris

awwwww..I don't know if it's true or not..but this was a delightful read, Tim.
I don't think we had banana seats yet.
The rhythm and rhyme were perfect reading this aloud.

The Statler Brothers have a song, "Maple Street", which is much like this in design, a delightful reminisce of those dusky summer days and twilight shadows...

and of the Mary Sues who took on the 10 foot boys...

thank you, Tim...

Tim, I so enjoyed this and it flooded me with memories of my own bike, although it was not as fancy as yours.

I just rented the movie "Hearts of Atlantis" with Anthony Hopkins and in it the little boy desperately wants a beautifuly new Schwinn bike. The dreams of a youngster.

Oh the things that evoke memories are such a treasure.

Hugs, Marti
