As Any Other Day

the finches came to feed
as any other day
when they’d finished their repast
they simply flew away

in spite of a
September 12th stomach
I came just as the finch
the normalcy of food
was soothing in a pinch

more excitement
I do not need
to filter through my day
a bit of ennui’s boredom
might chase these fears away

let’s pass the hours quietly
in reflection and in mourn
not adding any wounds
to the ones that we have borne

our nation stands in sorrow
going about our daily tasks
how to make some sense of it
is meaningless to ask

yet moving forward is what’s right
in unity of hope
it’s the only way on earth
we’ll find the strength to cope

so give a thought to smile
or bring about a laugh
the best medicine’s been found
for this world’s entire staff
