Bear Hugs

It’s gradual, our embrace
of you;
there is a spirit of pity,
you, having to wait
for trust’s recovery.

We allow it to be divvied
in brief, tight hugs,
with quick retreats
to reflect
and protect,
mama bear in her den,
babies huddled behind her.

Fear keeps us there,
all summer we wear
thickened coats,
a winter’s layering
to keep us warm
and safe
