Swamp at Dawn Darkness fills the murky bog Where moss embraces cypress log A frog’s persistent groggy croak Now ceases under misty cloak Beneath the dark of Everglades Along a bank of saw grass blades A beam through haze had gently come And lit the slime of surface scum Then in the water’s moonlit sight Two blinking eyes gave life to night And glided in between the roots Of legs that wear no shoes or boots Appendages in tangled length Twist ‘round each other giving strength And when the full moon shone it’s light They looked like phantoms in the night The home of owl and pelican Of bear and water moccasin Of panther, fox and white tailed deer That live afar or places near The murky dark is turned around ‘Midst Spanish mosses hanging down And creatures underwater world Comes into view as day unfurled White Egret wings against the dark Of cinnamon red of mangrovebark From out the hollow of a marsh Where beauty’s frail and life is harsh Awaken life when the sun beams rise In streaking rays from dawning skies Which fall upon an orchids face So lovely , delicate, full of grace The floral eye so tenderly Watches o’er Okeechobee The strong survive the wild that be And somewhere swim the Manatee Elizabeth Santos |

I love this - you have given such a vivid description and I can see the gentle manatee. Hugs, Marti "Even if life is full of thorns, I still embrace it for I know that in between those thorns, there is a rose worth all the pain." |

To see the world through your eyes is beautiful, indeed. You always seem to add that certain je ne sais quois to the world's canvas and you paint it with such richness and grace, I adore your writing! Take care, Melissa~ "Poetry is not an opinion expressed... |

A beautiful rendering, Liz. I drove across Alligator Alley today, a 110 mile strip of road that connects east Florida with west and I saw many things you have just described in this poem.....fortunately no alligators! |
