I would pace, But I’ve not the energy, So I sit, Calmly sit, For seeming eternity, And you know I would go If I thought there’s someone to see, But I sit Calmly sit, Waiting what seems endlessly For her face To give a small smile to me. Homies and druggies mill about Tossing coins at corners of dirty walls Getting loud at each other they shout To passing cars they make their sales calls. This isn’t the right place or time So into a passing bus I climb Flashing my monthly ride pass to the driver And quietly I sit directly behind her. The city changes with the passage Gone behind now leaving the rows of rage Into the developed and reclaimed homes Gentrified by the progressive reclaimers The see through windows of fine Italian stone And grids of stainless steel retainers. I leave the bus to walk a clean swept street, Unknown to anyone there’s no one to greet. Yet this is where I might see a vision of beauty Come twilight this where she might be. I would sit, But it might bring attention, Perhaps pace, Slow not race, Unnoticed is my intention, So to stay All the way Till she comes by at twilight And I see Her beauty Before the day turns to night, I would sit But I stir with emotion. The clouds covered the setting sun As the streetlights came on one by one Giving spotlights of bright along the way Guiding the workers home as they ended their day. The rumble of car and buses joined the thunder That came from far off places in the suburban west Where was the rain passing I paused to wonder As I found a lamppost to give my pacing a rest And seem not so impatient to a passing eye, Nonchalant and belonging to this place Not giving the rise of my being or the why Till I could see the beauty of her face. Lightening strobes cast surrealistic shadows And rain started to tap gently on nearby windows And I saw the approach of the cross town bus So before the drenching off I did rush To maybe return this way Another day. "And you know I would go If I thought there’s someone to see" seems most of us are waiting on concrete steps waiting...just waiting...helen |
