The sea farin gent was a man of tales of fish and sharks and man-eatin whales But he told me this one that was such a lark With a light in his eye like of a flames spark "Me maties and I were out on the sea The wind she was screamin like a wild banshee The sky she got hazy, gray like the waters I've not seen such a thing since the eyes of me daughters!" The gent laughed at his follied comparison Then went on to tell his tale as ships garrison "I stood me post e'en while the wind was a howlin a good capitain would ne'er be caught cowerin But I could hardly beleive me very own own eyes When I saw what I did, took me quite by surprise. Out in the midst of the skys battle brewin a mermaid she sat on a rock just a stewin I yelled to me maties, 'Men, though I know it be tough Get this vessel to the rocks, we're not close enough'" Now I looked as the gent with a skeptical glance A mermaid indeed, Ach.. what's the chance But he looked right back stared me strait in the eye "I know it be shocking, imagine me surpise! But there she was temper hot as hell Was by the fire in her eyes that I could tell. I swear as we neared, the air was scented of brimstone even, from that which she vented She looked at me once and gave out a laugh then looked to the skys as the lightnin crashed. She said, 'Ye best be heading away from my hive this storm and these rocks ye'll be eaten alive!' But how could I go after seein such a thing a mermaid indeed, like right from a dream! I hollered to her so my words would get through, 'Dear Lass, I can't believe the irony of you! Sittin and scoffin on that rock in a storm I swear the sky's speakin that mood you adorn' She flipped her tail as she looked at me and her eyes burned brighter than could ever be! She told me, in fury, of her merman husband and I tell ya, she just started cussin 'Mermen' she said, 'they be all the same thinking that marriage is some silly game But that Man o' mine he's got somethin else comin I packed all me shells and took off a runnin and here I sit and the skys bout to burst But I'll be damned if I go back first He best be collectin the finest of corrals to pay in a fine necklace for forgettin his morals' She spouted about talkin to King Triton, her daddy Praise be for me, I'm not that laddy I tell ya she was fumin and screamin She put to shame us foul talkin seaman! But she stopped rather quickly as the sky started to thunder She looked to the rocks and realized the blunder 'I say Captian of that mighty vessel Ye'd best to listen and not give a hastle Please fly away before ye get close to these stones Or I fear they'll become yer very tombstones' and I had to admit it was indeed gettin nasty me maties turned bow, and rather quite hasty But I learned me a lesson for that mermaids fury Don't be messin around on yer wife in a hurry Lest ya be ready to face one terrible wrath" And with that he let out a long hard laugh!
