This has been begging to be written ever since my trip Memorial Week-end when nearly every turn of the freeway, brought more Scotch broom into view. Scotch broom, at every turn, has swept the dust from my memory and conjured up my times with my favorite grandpa. They were his favorite flower. He died when I was six, a plot on a hill, overlooking scotch broom, was chosen. Odd how our ‘ever so short a’ time together is more precious to me than so many other things. We made... had rocking chair dreams swirled peanut butter and molasses were peaches and cream. whispers in the next room heard all so very well, yet words spoken audibly he rarely could tell. comfort of his lap, the texture of his shirt, hoeing up strawerry plants in the neighboring dirt, white turkeys in the pen, a garden on the side, Grandpa’s whiskered smiles held my heart real tight. ©June 9, 2002 Virginia Salter’s Grandpa Wallace died in 1951 51 years ago Whether on the shoal or on the shore, |

Virginia This is very touching and tender.....I can see you curled up in his lap. Amazing how kids can feel that love and the feeling and understanding never leaves them. This is an exceptional write! Thanks for sharing! |

Virginia... I too have so many wonderful memories of my own grandfather...who died 46 years ago, just when I was beginning to really have all of those wonderful moments with him at the age of 8. Amazing how a grandfather can really stick to our ribs.... You too have had many of those memories as shown within this very touching poem... |
