I must confess I really am upset!
I know the world’s gone goofy but how stupid can it get?
I thought I had seen all there is to see
But now Speedy Gonzalez has been taken off t.v!

Do you remember Speedy, that cute putz?
The one that tortured Elmer Fudd and drove Sylvester nuts?
On Looney Tunes he was the king, you see
And now the king has been dethroned and booted off t.v.!

For those of you who, back then, weren’t alive
Our Speedy got an Academy Award in 1955
Plus Oscar mentions for three other shows
Pied Piper of Guadaloupe”, “Tabasco Road” and “Mexicali Schmoes”.

He was in Space Jam – 1996
And still in Christmas merchandise he’s one ofkids top picks.
Nintendo Game Boy has his game to play
But only there in Europe – not sold in the USA.

The “fastest mouse in Mejico” is gone
In this age of correctness he is just another pawn.
Mister Magoo and Elmer Fudd gone, too.
Nearsightedness and stuttering on tv just won’t do!

“Bugs Nips the Nips” one time felt censor’s blade
When Japanese protested at the way they were displayed.
Perhaps these groups had valid cause but still
I do believe in Speedy’s case it’s too much overkill.

The word came from Ted Turner at the top
That racial stereotyping such as Speedy G. must stop.
The womanizing, drunkenness and such
Perhaps reminds Ted of himself a little bit too much.

For him to say that really is insane
Since he had wed the biggest cartoon figure….Hanoi Jane.
But Fox told Cartoon Network Speedy’s through
And, since he is the tuerto there, there’s nothing they can do.

There is a protest movement happening now
To try to find a way to bring old Speedy back somehow
And it may be successful ‘cause, you see,
The folks who want him back are the latin community!

In Mexico he is the favorite there
And, if he is a bad example, Mexicans don’t care!
They love their mouse and, frankly so do I.
Perhaps once morethe “fastest feet in Mejico” will fly.

On one hand I do understand if this offends someone. But on the other hand, anything can be perceived as offensive! I could be offended by Blondie who displayed housewives as ditzes! (in the beginning before she became a caterer)

I enjoyed this poem sir.

’Deer dearest heart Oh my goodness is this really TRUE? They have banned Speedy Gonzalas? How can they take him off the telly that is simply criminal.

As always your writing is brilliant and I love it, the meter, the rhyme, and the flow are as always absolutely perfect.

I can’t believe they’ve taken him off the screen, he’s a cutie. Um der lay um der lay ariba…. And viva Mejico I say. I hope the Mexican’s and you all get him back.

1955 that was the year I was born, so I don’t remember him getting an Oscar but he certainly deserved it, he was always a favourite of mine.

This really is absolutely perfect poetry, welcome home dear ‘Deer, I love this. Now start a petition and I’ll sign it, bring back the fastest mouse in all Mejico

As always a very well done write. Somehow you make even a chartoon character into an emotional and political symbol.  I too loved S.G. I am saddened to hear that S.G. has become just another victom in the war of policital correctness. When will we learn?

Hah. Speedy ran all over my casa when I was a little senorita. And to answer the Q When will we ever learn? apparently not until there are only mutant space aliens left to joke about, and even then, we would be insensitive. I don't like racial or religious profiling. But I have this feeling my amigos in the San Fernando Valley might get muy maddo about this decision.

Hmppp!

They've removed my ... undula, undula, yeeva, yeeva, yeppa, yeppa (least that's how it sounds in my head when I've been repeating it all these years, lol).

Sheesh ... what's next!  Maybe they should remove the RoadRunner, because the coyote gives far too much advertising time to The ACME Company ... unfair competition rules and all, lol ...

Great poem Michael ... great points!

Best wishes,
/Kit

Innocent Ideas, today's perceived prejudices, Speedy joins the list of lost classics:
RIP....

Little Black Sambo
Amos and Andy
Speedy Gonzales

Whatever happened to Mighty Mouse? "Here he comes to save the day!!!"....Have mice lover's around the world united, or has some mean vicious Pest Exterminator found a way to penetrate that strength?..They still let Richard Simmons on TV? Pee Wee Herman? They don't allow Toerag on TV anymore either? (I think it's those athlete's foot medicine companies in cahoots, or maybe Haines sock company?)...Geesch! What's this world coming to?.....

Who are we trying to fool...we can't change the past...but we can learn from the past...but not if they throw away all the history books and ban the movies and the cartoons from the past...
I suppose there are quite a few out there that would like everyone to forget Hanoi Jane's actions also...James

Yanno... I've never once met anyone who could trace their prejudices back to cartoon stereotypes... it makes me wonder how I ever came to love felines so much since they were so often portrayed as villians. This is a poem I wish you hadn't had to write... but you wrote it well.

Kit...I'm against anyone removing ANYTHING of yours! and, actually, Road Runner has been under attack for some time due to the violence on the show. Go figure.......

walt...you may be right...hold on to those treasures!!!

Toerag...Mighty Mouse had a fling with Minnie. She complained to the producers that he was faster than a speeding bullet so they called him a rat and yanked him. He is, however, still "On the sea and on the land, he keeps the situation well in hand!"

’Deer hi there again as you can see just how far behind I’m with my reading. This is an outrage how dare they take away Senor Speedy he’s about the only mouse I wouldn’t send Blossom after Blossom is my cat, but she’s too lazy to catch anything even a cold.

This as always is really great writing I love it, you are the most entertaining writer you know, and always manage to make me react to your wonderful poems. Which is the mark of an excellent writer

Holla, Senor Balledeer. I understand that Speedy G. is now living with the Frito Bandito down in Mexicali.  Word is they are planning another revolution.  Strangly enough, I just saw our rodster rodent on the Cartoon Network here in So. Cal. just last week.  Perhaps he is trying to outrun Senor T.  Enjoyed the read.  Hasta luega mi compadre!

No!  Not Speedy - he is my favorite!

Where do I sign the petition - now they have just gone just too darn far!  And I suppose they replace him with the ever-popular "1-900 call me only $500 a call...like I really look like this advertisement", that doesn't offend me in any way!
Oh this was good!  Really good!  Really, really good!
