1945 They were gathered at the station and a surge of pure elation Could be felt by anyone who wandered near. Days had been marked off each week, now the young wife couldn’t speak As she waited for the train to bring her dear. For three years, she’d read each letter, trying to understand better Why she’d given birth and raised her child alone. Dad was halfway round the world when their tiny little girl Breathed her first breath - and now he is almost home. Then at last they see his face, feel the warmth of his embrace, Cousins shout and every eye is drenched with tears A bright future is before him. Memories? He’ll just ignore them For his sacrifice has freed the world from fears. 1971 How could he ever explain that the harsh, unceasing pain Is within his mind - his body was left whole? And who is there left to care? Guys return from “over there” To taunts and jeers that sear a weary soul. His old girlfriend marched for peace and the bond between them ceased As he felt her anger, not for but at him. He once worked in a store; that job’s not there anymore His few prospects now are looking fairly grim He didn’t ask to go, but to tell his country no Was against all that he’d been taught to believe Never quite declared a war, what was all the fighting for? And why should such condemnation he receive? 2002 Nothing is quite like before, terror has slammed shut the door On innocence. Blood has soaked our native land. The horror’s not abated, why is it we are so hated? Still in shock, we struggle to understand. A big hole in New York’s sky made the free world hurt and cry Then against a common enemy unite Men and women side by side seek out evil where it hides While their nations pray that they will win this fight. Nothing will be the same again. Those words were probably spoken over and over again by generation after generation ... and they are, and will continue to be, true. I loved your write |

peace ... the goal for each soul... Ruth this is a cadence kissed write of truth and a very timely piece in light of the final piece of the World Trade Center being removed and the services being held today. (big hugggsssssss) Oh Suthern, this is so very powerful and true, sweet friend, it saddens me to see that we just can't seem to make an agreement and that history is a continuing timeline and one simple solution cannot be made to save us all! (sigh) I pray that soon peace can fill this world, sweet friend, I wish it with all my heart, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet friend, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton "Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..." |

Absolutely...every generation seems to have a Pearl Harbor or a Vietnam or a Somalia or a Hitler or a Saddam or a bin Laden to deal with...I have a feeling it will only end when this world ends...James |

Suthern darling girl yet again darling heart you have written the perfect poem, flows like a dream, words etched in gold and the rhyme is utterly utterly divine. YOU know I love this one don’t you. Stunning piece of writing from you, utterly outstanding. The way you carried the theme through, so often your work is the epitome of style and form, In this you’ve written this so clearly so truthfully that the reader simply cannot ignore the problem and pretend it isn’t happening. The message comes through so well, the more things change the more they stay the same. Except there is hope and with writers like you to flag there will be peace we shall prevail. Absolutely excellent writing here well done darling girl. I did tell you that I utterly utterly love this didn’t I Love and warm stuff As always Mushy Breathe through the heat of our desire |

This one needs to stay on top, suthern - You've said far too much here not to be heard a little louder.... |
